Summer Game Fest brought with it plenty of exciting announcements, including trailers for Mortal Kombat 1, Dead by Daylight, and Path of Exile 2. Grinding Gear Games' free-to-play action RPG follow-up to Path of Exile was announced back in 2019, but the developer has been fairly quiet about its upcoming sequel in the years since. Now, fans have been treated to a world premiere trailer showing off some of Path of Exile 2's action and the promise of more details to come during ExileCon in July.

The 2013 hit Path of Exile, initially released for PC and later ported to consoles, was warmly received by players. With praise for its genre innovations, darkly intriguing world design, and challenging gameplay, it was considered a solid addition to the pool of action RPGs. Although developer Grinding Gear Games supplied a steady stream of expansion packs over the years, a decade after its release Path of Exile has started to feel dated compared to its competitors. An update is sorely needed, and with how Path of Exile 2 is shaping up, it seems like it could be the perfect accompaniment to Blizzard's recently released Diablo 4.

The “Ngamakanui” teaser trailer gave fans a better look at the highly-anticipated Path of Exile 2, including glimpses of gameplay, an insight into the new look of the in-game world, and a selection of the game's enemies. Although the trailer was only short, gamers were pleased to see Path of Exile 2 in action and to be reassured that they'll be able to get their hands on it soon. Showing a brief encounter as a character is swarmed by enemies, the teaser trailer demonstrated a few magical abilities as the besieged figure fired off a handful of different spells to clear their path.

Set twenty years after the events of the first game, Path of Exile 2 will feature a new seven-act campaign and will make some significant changes to the game engine, visuals, and gameplay. The developer has previously spoken about some of the updates that will be coming to Path of Exile 2 including the "better bosses, a new skill gem system, and gorgeous graphics," and fans will be looking forward to learning more about the game in July, with hopefully a more in-depth look during ExileCon.

Path of Exile has made it into many gamers' lists of top PC role-playing games, and it's enjoyed a dedicated fan base since its release with a healthy list of expansions and updates across its lifespan. Plenty of people were excited for a sequel, and while the developer has taken its time releasing one, there's still a high level of hype for Path of Exile 2's launch. Inevitably, Path of Exile 2 is being compared to Diablo 4 despite it not yet being out, as both are recognizable names in the fantasy RPG sphere. Path of Exile updated and reimagined many of the elements that were central to earlier Diablo installments, and players are hoping Path of Exile 2 can pull off a similar feat.

While Path of Exile 2 might be looking to bring its own innovations to the genre, there are enough similarities with Diablo 4 that fans of one will likely enjoy the other. Both series have been known for their more hardcore approach to gaming, which could appeal to traditionalists and newcomers alike. Path of Exile 2's status as a free-to-play game also works in its favor, but the macabre visuals, darkly demonic vibe, and depth of character-building in both should make for an interesting experience. Path of Exile 2's sheer amount of options when it comes to how players can shape their characters should match even Diablo 4's promise of greater customization, ensuring that both titles build on their foundational earlier entries in promising new ways.

Path of Exile 2 is in development.
