Highlights

  • Path of Exile 2 offers 12 classes with unique Ascendancy options, allowing for specialized build crafting potential.
  • The absence of the tri-attribute Scion class in Path of Exile 2 may be a strategic omission by Grinding Gear Games.
  • Although it's speculation for now, GGG could introduce the Scion in Path of Exile 2 through hidden content or challenges.

Path of Exile 2 looks like a massive game even compared to the colossus that is the original, doubling down on some of the most iconic aspects that made Path of Exile one of the best action RPGs around. One of these elements is the way Path of Exile 2's classes seem to offer a vast array of options for players to look forward to, with the overall total going from seven to 12, including two classes per attribute or attribute combination. Path of Exile 2 uses the same stats as its predecessor, which are Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence. With dedicated classes for each attribute and stat combo in the game, it feels strange that Path of Exile 2 is skipping over the Scion - but there may be more than meets the eye.

A huge boon of featuring a total of 12 classes in Path of Exile 2 is that not only are they more specialized than those in the original game, but they also have 3 Ascendancy classes each, further expanding the game's buildcrafting potential. As it stands, it looks like Path of Exile 2 will allow players to explore any niche they might be interested in when it comes to action RPG archetypes. However, the Scion will be sorely missed if it's indeed not in the game, although there may be surprises waiting ahead.

Path of Exile's Scion May Not Have to Face The Reaper After All

Path of Exile 2's Classes Could Use a Missing Combination With The Scion

Path of Exile's Scion was and still is one of the most popular classes due to its fantastic starting point in the skill tree, giving players access to pretty much any branch they want provided they are willing to invest in it. This is because the Scion is a tri-attribute class, meaning it specializes in all three stats in the game, offering what is arguably the best starting position in the tree due to how players can go any route outward from within.

Path of Exile 2's trailers have all glossed over the Scion, and with a lineup of 12 classes all announced and some even showcased in gameplay videos, it seems like the Scion did get the short end of the stick. If this is the case, it may be because the Ascendant Ascendancy class is and would have been too strong in Path of Exile 2, as the original has it combining different powers from all the other Ascendancy classes. Still, there is a big out for Grinding Gear Games if it ever wants to add the Scion or if there are already plans in place to do so.

How GGG May Add The Scion to Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile's Scion Still Has a Chance to Return in The Sequel

The original Path of Exile added the Scion at a later date rather than from the get-go, and on top of that, players had to unlock the class first before they could play it, which was done by getting to the end of Act 3. With the sequel having fewer than 10 Acts compared to the original, Grinding Gear Games could still add the Scion at any moment and have the class be unlocked when reaching a given point, further increasing the number of Path of Exile 2's classes.

GGG could even be hiding such a plan from the players only to let them find the Scion for themselves, possibly tucked away somewhere in the game's Acts or having the class become available after beating secret bosses or puzzles, much like the original Path of Exile features hidden Labyrinths that unlock Ascendancy classes. There are a lot of options for GGG to take if it wishes to spice up Path of Exile 2's endgame with yet another class, and the Ascendant could very well do that thanks to its great versatility and easy access to the best parts of the game's huge skill tree.
