Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, an extremely popular game from Mario’s GameCube era, could be getting a remaster on the Nintendo Switch, at least if a new rumor is to be believed. Nintendo’s favorite plumber has been getting a lot of love lately thanks to the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which has managed to break box office records despite mixed reviews. To top this off, Shigeru Miyamoto recently hinted that a new Mario game could be announced in the near future.

In the meantime, Nintendo has been busy bringing games from its long and illustrious backlog to the current Switch console in remastered form. In February, Metroid Prime Remastered launched to much praise, bringing Samus’s first GameCube adventure into the modern age of gaming with updated graphics and improved controls. About a month later, word of an F-Zero remaster from the developers of the fan-favorite Luigi's Mansion series started to spread. Now, there are hints that Nintendo might be looking to remaster another classic of the early 2000s - one that Mario fans have been requesting for quite some time.

Earlier this week, an anonymous user on Famiboards claimed to have information about a planned Switch remaster of 2004’s Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. They say that this information was provided to them by three different sources who are supposedly working on the game and contacted the user through LinkedIn. Two of these sources reportedly told the user when this Thousand-Year Door remaster will be released, but since the third has not confirmed this, the user simply notes that it could be “coming soon.”

The Paper Mario series stands out from the rest of the franchise thanks to its sticker-like esthetic and RPG gameplay mechanics, which have players using timed button prompts and special abilities to attack enemies and save the Mushroom Kingdom. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was the second installment in the series and gave Mario the ability to flip between 2D and 3D worlds to reveal new pathways and puzzle solutions. The Thousand-Year Door is considered by many to be the best installment in the series and one of the greatest Nintendo GameCube exclusives of all time.

This new rumor should still be taken with a grain of salt given the anonymous nature of its sources, but the timing for a remaster of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is just right considering Mario’s recent success on the big screen. There have been plenty of similar rumors in the past, but only time will tell if Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is indeed getting an update for the Nintendo Switch.
