Nintendo has released a retro GameCube cover for the Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door in celebration of its launch on May 23. The original game, a follow-up to Paper Mario, was developed by Intelligent Systems and released in 2004 for GameCube. Being one of the few RPGs in the long-running Mario franchise, combined with a unique art style, whimsical story, and engaging gameplay, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door enjoyed a positive reception from players and reviewers alike.

A remake of the 20-year-old classic was announced in 2023 during a Nintendo Direct presentation. The Switch version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door offers updated graphics and sharper textures, along with an aspect ratio to 16:9 so that gamers can fully enjoy the new visuals on modern screens. The soundtrack has also been revamped, though players can opt to listen to the original tunes as well, and there have also been quality-of-life adjustments to existing mechanics like quick-travel pipes and party management.
