Star Points are guaranteed for every enemy (or enemies) you defeat, but you'll also receive Coins and occasionally an Item. However, since Items aren't always a definite and your Coin and Star Points earnings may be low, you may be wondering how to increase the rewards. In The Thousand-Year Door, Merlee, a Fortune Teller, can grant you reward bonuses outside and even in battle. The effects themselves are randomized, but her deals are well worth your Coins.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door – How to Upgrade Partner to Ultra Rank (Merlon's Quest)
Curious how to rank-up your partners a second time in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door? Here's how to solve Merlon's quest and find what he seeks.
Where to Find Merlee (Fortune Teller)
Rogueport Underground
Merlee's hut is all the way in the background in the Rogueport Underground (east):
- You'll need to take the warp pipe outside Professor Frankly's house to reach the sewers.
- Once you're in the sewers, keep going right until you see a paper airplane platform. You'll notice a green warp pipe locked behind a gate, which can only be accessed after you unlock the ability to turn sideways (ZR-button). You will get this ability in Hooktail's Castle.
- Entering the pipe will make you spawn on the path in the far back, where you can jump across the platforms to enter the hut with the blue light.
You may have found the other Fortune Teller, Merluvlee, in Rogueport. Unlike Merlee, you can visit Merluvlee before Hooktail's Castle. Merluvlee won't grant you battle Fortunes, but she can point you in the direction of Star Pieces and Shine Sprites.
Every Fortune & What They Do
What Are Fortune Paths?
Fortunes have a chance of triggering during or after battle, but you won't be able to choose when they occur. There are four types of Fortunes in Thousand-Year Door:
Fortunes During Battle |
|
---|---|
Fortunes After Battle |
|
The "battle" Fortunes only affect Mario.
As stated, Fortunes occur at random, but you can increase the duration of Fortunes by paying for a longer Fortune Path. You'll have three paths to choose from. Paths will determine how "long" you'll have Fortunes.
Price | |
---|---|
Cheap Path | 5 |
Normal Path | 20 |
Special Path | 50 |
The most expensive is the Special Path, but 50 Coins may not be too pricey depending on where you're at in the playthrough. It's recommended you choose the Special Path if you're going into an area with tons of enemies (ex: Pit of 100 Trials). The Special Path purchase can also be useful if you're trying to farm Star Points and Coins.
If you're using Merlee's Fortunes as soon as they become available to you, then you may want to choose the Normal Path (20 Coins). Completing Chapter 2 opens up new badges that you can purchase at Lovely Howz of Badges, so you might want to put your money towards battle supplies for the time being.
