You'll be collecting plenty of items during your Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door playthrough that can be used during and sometimes out of battle. If you're not expanding your storage, then you'll have a limit of 15 items. If you're looking to stock up on items that can inflict ailments on your enemies, then you should consider Ruin Powder. Not only can this hinder your opponents, but it can also be used as an ingredient for cooking. Unfortunately, Ruin Powder is impossible to come by in the beginning chapters of Thousand-Year Door, so it'll be some time before you can start collecting it.

Every Way to Get Ruin Powder in Thousand-Year Door

Can You Buy Ruin Powder?

Ruin Powders can be bought from Northwinds Mart at Fahr Outpost. One bag of Ruin Powder costs 15 Coins. However, you won't be able to enter the warp pipe to Fahr Outpost until you've received the Ultra Hammer. This can be obtained by using the Spring Jump (unlocked in Chapter 6) under the roof outside the inn. If you're playing through Thousand-Year Door's campaign, you'll eventually unlock Fahr Outpost at the end of Chapter 6.

If you want to avoid spending Coins, you can farm Ruin Powders from the following enemies, most of which can be found in the Pit of 100 Trials:

  • Green Fuzzies
  • Phantom Embers
  • Ice Puffs
  • Dark Craws
  • Swampires
  • Hyper Paragoombas
  • X-Naut PhDs
  • Lakitus (Glitz Pit)

Another method of getting Ruin Powder is to have Zess T. cook a Point Swamp and a Spite Pouch. These items are far more common than the Ruin Powder and can be bought from most stores. However, Zess T. won't be able to cook two ingredients until you've acquired the Cookbook key item, which you'll need for her "Seeking legendary book!" request at the Trouble Center.

Finally, the earliest area where you can find Ruin Powder is Pirate's Grotto in Chapter 5. Right as you enter, you'll want to enter and inspect the barrels at the southwest corner of the screen. Refer to the image below for the exact location:

How to Use Ruin Powder?

Can You Cook Ruin Powder?

paper mario the thousand year door - ruin powder effect

Ruin Powder can be used just like any other item in Thousand-Year Door. During Mario or his partner's turn, select Ruin Powder from the Items box. If you use Ruin Powder in battle, it'll confuse all enemies. A Confused status will mess up the enemies' actions, causing them to attack each other or heal Mario.

Another way to use Ruin Powder is to cook it with a Peachy Peach or Cake Mix to create a Heartful Cake. This is an item that restores 20SP while inflicting the Soft ailment on the user. Soft will lower Mario (or his partner's) Defense for the duration of the battle or until he's inflicted with a different status ailment. Again: You won't be able to cook Ruin Powder with the Cake Mix/Peachy Peach until you give Zess T. the Cookbook. This key item can be found in the first room of Creepy Steeple.
