You can try your luck in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door at the Happy Lucky Lottery in Rogueport. The prizes to be won range from useful to mediocre, but if you have the Coins, the risk might be worth taking. The Happy Lucky Lottery is run by a large Bob-omb named Lucky. Once you have your Lottery Ticket, you can check the daily numbers and speak to Lucky for your reward. To get the best prizes, you'll want to understand how the lottery system works in Thousand-Year Door.

Where is the Happy Lucky Lottery?

How to Get Lottery Ticket

You can find the Happy Lucky Lottery in front of the Pianta Parlor in Rogueport (West). To get to the west side of Rogueport, you'll need to give Zess T. Toad a contact lens. This can be obtained by going into the nearby shop (Toad Bros. Bazaar). You'll need to interact with the out-of-stock contact lens sign and place an order. From there, you'll receive an email notifying you when the contact lens is back on shelves. It's only 10 Coins, so you should have the money for it even if you're starting a new playthrough. After you give Zess T. the contact lens, you can finally enter Western Rogueport.

Speak to Lucky the Bob-omb to learn about the lottery and to purchase a Lottery Ticket (10 Coins for newcomers; 500 Coins for returning participants). Each day, a four-digit number is shown on the board, and depending on how many of your ticket's numbers match the drawing, you'll receive a different prize.

How to Get Every Happy Lucky Lottery Prize

Are Numbers Randomized?

The numbers on the board are not randomized and are instead cycled through a system. If you check the number from 1-3 days (in real time) of purchasing the ticket, you'll get a consolation prize. If you check within 4-10 days, at least one of your ticket's numbers will match the drawing. Here's every prize and how you can get them:

Prize

Time Period After Purchasing Ticket

No Matching Numbers (Consolation Prize)

Mushroom

1-3 Days

1 Matching Number

Life Mushroom

4-10 Days

2 Matching Numbers

Ultra Mushroom

25-35 Days

3 Matching Numbers

Power Plus Badge (or *Zess Special)

85-115 Days

4 Matching Numbers (Jackpot)

Lucky Day Badge (or *Zess Dynamite)

335+ Days

* You'll only receive the Zess Dynamite or the Zess Special if you've already won the Lucky Day Badge and Power Plus Badge respectively.

The consolation prize (Mushroom) and 1-2 Matching Numbers prizes can be useful, albeit underwhelming. You can easily buy HP-replenshing items from the stores. Instead, you'll want to try and get the Power Plus Badge and the Lucky Day Badge. These two badges have the following effects:

  • Power Plus Badge: (6 BP needed) Increases the power of Mario's Jump and Hammer attacks by 1 point. Can be stacked with other Power Plus Badges to further enhance Attack power.
  • Lucky Day Badge: (7 BP needed) Enemies are likely to miss when attacking Mario.

The Power Plus Badge and the Lucky Day Badge can also be obtained via other methods. You'll get a Power Plus Badge inside the well by Creepy Steeple, and the Lucky Day Badge can be looted from the chest on Floor 90 of the Pit of 100 Trials. However, if you want these badges "early," you'll want to win the Happy Lucky Lottery.

What Happens If You Cheat the Happy Lucky Lottery?

Change the Clock on Switch

Of course, not everyone's going to want to wait 355+ days in real time just to get a special badge in Thousand-Year Door. You can cheat the Lucky Lottery by changing the day on your Nintendo Switch (through Settings). Just add 355 days on top of the day you get the Lottery Ticket, then check the board.

If you change your Switch's date a day before, then there will be a special notice on the Happy Lucky Lottery board, declaring the lottery has been canceled. You'll also notice Lucky with a black squiggle speech bubble over his head. Speaking to Lucky will reveal that someone has "cheated" the lottery. You'll then be prompted to either fess up or lie. Choosing to tell the truth will result in Lucky getting angry and "shutting down" the game, resulting in a fake Game Over. Regardless of your answer, your first Lottery Ticket will be nullified, so you'll need to purchase another one. A second Lottery Ticket will cost 500 Coins.
