Best Order To Upgrade Partners In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Still trying to decide which partners to upgrade first in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door? These are all of them, ranked from worst to best.

Updated on May 31, 2024, by Christina Roffe: Coins are an important currency in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door that will allow you to purchase new items at local vendors, upgrade your team, respec some of your stats, and much more. However, it isn't always the easiest thing to obtain in the game, especially when you are still at the beginning. After spending more time playing through the story and reaching new locations, we have uncovered a few new methods to make a large amount of money quickly. Most of these new methods can be easily accessed by early-game players as well.

How To Get Coins From Enemies In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

One of the most common methods for farming coins in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is by defeating enemies (and using some Stylish Moves) in the overworld. Whenever you beat a single enemy or a group, they will drop some coins after the battle. Make sure to pick them all up before they disappear.

The best spots to find many enemies are on the outskirts of cities, such as Boggly Woods or Petal Meadows. In these grassy areas in the wild, there will be a wide variety of Goomba enemies, Koopa enemies, Bald Clefts, and Piranha Plants. Keep in mind, however, that they typically only drop a few coins at a time, usually anywhere from 2 to 6 coins. This method won't necessarily give you the most coins at once, but it is consistent, and you will already be battling enemies as you progress through the story.

How To Get Coins From Lumpy In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

One of the easiest methods for farming coins is by visiting Lumpy and investing coins in him. To find him, you'll want to return to the Rogueport docks where you first started the game and were introduced to Save Blocks. He can be found on the eastern side of the docks, near to the stairs leading into the town.

When you talk to him the first time, he will ask if you want to lend him some money. He will ask for an initial amount of 100 Coins, but you can return to him an additional two times and invest up to 300 Coins. Though this might seem like a scam, we assure you, it isn't. After Chapter 6, you can return to Lumpy, and he will provide you with 999 Coins if you invest 300 Coins.

How To Get Money Money Badge In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

This method you can use to get some coins in your pocket is obtaining the Money Money Badge. This can be picked up at the Pianta Parlor, which can be found in western Rogueport after you provide Zess T. with a new contact lens.

At the Pianta Parlor, you'll need to earn 234 Pianta Tokens to get the badge from the shop. You'll only have access to this item as a reward if you have the Platinum Card, however, which can be obtained through completing the Trouble Center quest, 'I must have that book.' You can find the Trouble Center in the eastern area of Rogueport, in the building with the green sign above it. After you unlock the Money Money Badge at Pianta Parlor, you can equip the badge, and it will increase the amount of coins you receive after battle. It will cost 5 BP to equip.

The Trouble Center is a house in Rogueport that you can access to complete requests from people. These quests will require you to often retrieve hidden items for the person, and you can get a wide variety of rewards in return, with some offering a large amount of coins.

As you complete more requests and get further in the game, you will have access to more Trouble Center requests. You can find the Trouble Center building on the eastern side of Rogueport, just past the guard requesting 10 Coins to access the area. It will have a green sign above its front door.

How to Get Coins From The Pit of 100 Trials in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Another overlooked method to gain a good amount of coins is by visiting the Pit of 100 Trials in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. You can find the pit in the Rogueport Sewers, specifically on the western side of the town. There are 100 floors you will need to go through in the pit, which gives you access to tons of enemies with the chance to drop a good number of coins.

However, before you take on the Pit of 100 Trials, it is highly recommended that you wait until you are at least level 30 or above. Though it will take some time to reach this level, it is worth the effort, so you can complete the pit in one go. You cannot save throughout the pit, meaning you will need to complete all 100 levels at once, or you will need to start from the beginning again. However, if you are looking to just get some coins, you can leave and go back to get more coins out of the pit.

How to Get Coins From the Glitz Pit in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

One of the best methods to earn a good number of coins in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is by returning to the Glitz Pit after you've completed Chapter 3 in Glitzville. All you will need to do is revisit the arena and talk to Jolene so she can get you set up as a fighter again. Keep in mind, however, that you will start again in the minor leagues, and it will take 19 battles to reach the top.

When you start in the minor leagues, you won't be making a ton of cash from the battles, but once you are towards the top again, you can make a large profit from the Glitz Pit. A lot of players neglect this method and completely forget to return to Glitzville, so we highly recommend using this strategy to your advantage.
