Highlights

  • Dual Dark & Dragon-type Pals like Astegon nullify weaknesses and resistances, making them powerful late-game choices.
  • Fire-type Pals boast the best defense in Palworld, resisting attacks from a large number of other elemental Pals.
  • Ice-type Pals are great for offense, with their freeze-inducing attacks disrupting enemy Pal chains in battles.

There are quite a few different element types in Palworld represented by the 137 Pals in the game (soon to be 138). And, just like in many other games with elemental combinations, certain elements in Palworld are stronger against others or weaker against others. For example, Pals using fire-type skills will deal double damage to a purely grass-type Pal. Meanwhile, a water Pal will only take half damage from an incoming fire-type attack.

So the player has beaten the champion and watched the credits roll — but that doesn't mean their Pokemon game journey is over.

In general, the 'main' elements of Palworld, those being Water, Fire, Grass, Ground, and Electric follow a circular chart of weaknesses and resistances while the elements like Ice, Dragon, Dark, and Neutral are a bit more unique. With that in mind, let's go over some of the strongest type combinations a Pal in Palworld can have, given the number of different elemental Pals in the game as well as how often these type combinations will deal extra damage against their opponents.

Pure Dragon-Type

Includes Elphidran, Quivern, & Jetragon

First up is the pure Dragon-type elemental alignment. While this might not 'seem' like a combination of two types, just think of Pals with one element type as actually having two of the same element type (AKA not just Dragon but actually Dragon-typex2). Now, Dragon-type Pals are only weak to ice skills and are entirely resistant to dark-type skills. Keep in mind that Dark-types are very common in Palworld, with Dark actually being the most commonly appearing element in the game overall.

Meanwhile, Ice-types, while not incredibly rare, are usually only found in the late or endgame areas of the map, meaning players with a pure Dragon-type Pal typically won't even need to be worried about Ice-type Pals until they reach the Astral Mountains area.

Dark & Dragon-Types

Only Astegon Has This Typing, But It's Very Powerful

Moving on to the first dual-type of two different elements, and it's one that's very rare, let's look at the Dark and Dragon dual-type. This dual-type is only seen once in Palworld (so far) with Astegon, one of the Pals that players will typically only encounter pretty late into their playthrough.

Making Legendary Spheres is a challenge, so players need to ensure they don't waste them. The following Pals justify the use of a Legendary Sphere.

So, not only is this typing incredibly rare, but it's also only used by one of the late-game powerhouses. Now the good thing about this dual-type is that it nullifies multiple weaknesses the individual types would have. Dragon-types are weak against Ice but resist Dark, while Dark-types are weak against Dragon and resist Neutral types. So, Astegon being a Dark and Dragon-type Pal means that it nullifies that Dragon-type weakness it would've had as a pure Dark-type while also nullifying that Ice-type weakness it would've had as a pure Dragon-type.

Pure Fire-Type

Surprisingly, the Most Defensive Element

Here's the thing about the Fire-type in Palworld, it's pretty common. However, due to the spread of how many Pals of each element there are in the game, the Fire-type actually comes away with having the highest number of overall Pal elements it resists compared to any other element.

To paint a more clear picture, if a pure Fire-type Pal was attacked by every other Pal in the game, each only using attacks of their element types, it would resist the attacks of around 62 of those Pals. That's a huge number (almost half of the Paldeck) and this is the primary reason why Fire-type Pals seem to be the best in defense, though not in base defense considering their attacks can cause some serious damage to wooden structures.

Pure Dark-Type

The Most Common Element In Palworld

Next, for dark-type Pals, it simply comes down to the fact that the only type they're weak against, Dragon-type, is one that's not all that common. While there are over 26 different Pals in Palworld with the Dark elemental typing, only 14 Pals total are Dragon-type.

While that isn't the lowest elemental representation in the game (Electric-types take that prize with only 11 Pals), it's tied for the second lowest with Ground-types. Additionally, a lot of moves that Pals start out with or that people tend to prefer are Neutral-type moves, meaning that's even more of an advantage for the pure Dark-type Pals.

Pure Ice-Type

The 'Frozen' Status Effect Is Pretty Common

Here's the thing about Palworld that separates it from a lot of other creature collectors, it doesn't have turn-based combat. While different Pals seem to have different speeds at which they'll use their attacks, in general, they'll just attack as soon as they possibly can. So, if there's a way for a player to interrupt that chain of attacks so that their own Pal can use multiple attacks in a row without being interrupted, then they should absolutely use that method.

This is exactly why Ice-types are actually pretty amazing for offense. Because Ice-type Pals learn so many Ice-type skills while leveling up, they have more chances (on average) to use an Ice-type move that'll freeze the opponent in place. More Pals being frozen means more uninterrupted attacks, and this is exactly why the Astral Mountain region of the map can be so difficult to survive in, even for strong Pal teams.

Pure Electric-Type

Shocking Pals Is Incredibly Easy To Do

For basically the justification as Ice-type Pals, Electric-type Pals are also amazing for offense in Palworld. In general, the 'shocked' effect that Pals can suffer from as a result of Electric-type attacks seems to occur more often than freezing does, as it basically happens with every single Electric-type attack.

This means players can constantly slow down an enemy's attack speed just by using Electric-type attacks, which of course are more likely to appear on Electric-type Pals. The only real downside is that Electric-type Pals show up the least of all the elements with only 11 Pals total having the Electric-type to their name.

Water & Ice Type

Just Pengullet & Penking

Palworld - Penking With Ice and Water PNGs on Top

Now surprisingly, given the sheer number of Pals in Palworld, there actually aren't that many with dual types of different elements. Out of the 137 in the game at the time of writing this, only 25 of them are dual-types. Among these 25, only 2 of them are both the Water-type and Ice-type, and those are Pengullet and Penking. There are a couple of reasons as to why a Pal with dual typing is amazing:

  • Water is resistant to Fire-type but Ice-type is weak against Fire-type, so these cancel out to a Water & Ice-type only taking the standard amount of damage from Fire-type skills.
  • There are around 68 Pals that are of the element that both the Water and Ice-types are resistant to, and that's a whole lot of Pals to be resistant against.
  • Because the elements are pretty similar in nature, both Pengullet and Penking learn a good number of Water-type and Ice-type skills as they level up.

So, while Pengullet, cute as it may be, may not be statistically one of the stronger Pals, its typing (and ridiculous Partner Skill) still makes it worth using. And Penking, who was already great as a Pal assigned to working at any base, is also amazing if a player wants to use it in their team.

Fire & Dragon-Types

Jormuntide Ignis Represents This Dual Type

Palworld - Petting Jormuntide Ignis With Fire and Dragon PNGs on Top

Now again, like with Astegon, there's only one Pal in Palworld that has the typing that seems to be the best overall, and it's Jormuntide Ignis. Jormuntide Ignis is both a Fire-type Pal and a Dragon-type Pal, and this means:

  • It resists both Grass-type and Dark-types.
  • It doesn't have the weakness to Ice-types that a pure Dragon-type would have.
  • It can deal extra damage to one of the types it resists (Dark-type) as well as dealing extra damage to a type it's no longer weak to (Ice-type)

In general, the Dragon-type is pretty good both offensively and defensively, based on the number of Pals it resists and the number of Pals it deals extra damage against. Meanwhile, the Fire-type, as stated earlier, has a ton of Pals it resists, so the result of combining them means that Jormuntide Ignis really has both offense and defense covered.
