Taking on the role of the healer in any game can be quite the task. Often, healers go unnoticed as they support their team either through PvE adventures or action-packed PvP matches. In Overwatch especially, some find it a chore to play from the roster of Support heroes. Earlier this year, fans found Overwatch 2's Support role so uninteresting that Blizzard made a statement saying that it was working on some changes to certain characters, similar to other evolutions other heroes received in Overwatch's sequel.
However, one fan has discovered that it might not be necessary to pick a Support hero in order to heal one's team. Specifically, they have found that D.Va, one of the most popular characters from Overwatch, can technically heal her teammates. Usually, D.Va is known primarily as a Tank in Overwatch and its sequel, able to withstand a lot of damage with her high health pool and Defense Matrix ability that allows her to destroy incoming projectiles. Alongside saving her team through blocking incoming projectiles, D.Va can also heal fellow players with Defense Matrix.
The way that this happens is a bit odd, but it is explained well by YouTuber Marblr, who goes into depth about the mechanics of projectiles in Overwatch. In the game, projectiles are given ownership, so that when something like Pharah's missile hits an enemy in Overwatch, the damage for that missile is given to the Pharah player. When a projectile is deflected through something like Genji's ability, the ownership of that projectile is then transferred, so that the Genji player is the one in control of the missile, healing orb, or whatever the projectile may be.
For D.Va's Defense Matrix, rather than her deleting a projectile as it enters the hit box of her ability, instead the ownership of it is transferred to D.Va before it is destroyed. So, if D.Va is to take control of one of Moira's healing orbs, for example, she can heal another player in that split-second that the projectile is under her control. However, for anyone hoping to avoid picking a healer Support in Overwatch by taking D.Va, her instantaneous healing only applies to enemies, as the destroyed healing orbs will give opponents a short amount of health.
There are some other oddities that Overwatch players have found with D.Va's abilities over the years since the game first launched. Some of these interactions are bugs, such as one occasion that saw D.Va teleport after using her ultimate in Overwatch. Another clip showed an unfortunate Zenyatta player being killed by D.Va's bomb, even after getting behind cover.
Overwatch 2 is scheduled to release on October 4 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
