Players familiar with Overwatch know that hearing “It’s High Noon” is a death sentence without finding cover. The iconic line signals Cassidy’s “Deadeye” ultimate, which locks onto the heads of any targets within his line of sight - this can secure a team wipe if enough enemies aren’t prepared.

Luckily, most Overwatch team compositions feature at least one shield, or make use of D.Va’s “Defense Matrix” or Roadhog’s “Chain Hook” to interrupt “Deadeye.” Moreover, the plenitude of cover available on most maps make defending against his ultimate fairly routine, and most tanks will be able to protect their team for as long as they keep track of him.

Uploaded to the Overwatch subreddit, a video posted by user Kiethavemezo shows Cassidy working in tandem with Symmetra approaching Eichenwalde’s third checkpoint. As Cassidy uses his ultimate in front of Baptiste’s “Amplification Matrix,” the defending enemy team backs off behind a corner, leaving Cassidy without any targets. In a stroke of quick thinking, the attacking Symmetra lays down her “Teleport” for the ulting Cassidy to go through, leading him around the corner and onto some flanking high ground. As they do this, the friendly Zarya uses her “Graviton Surge” to trap the enemy Sigma and Genji on the payload. Hoping to protect themselves, the Sigma uses his “Experimental Barrier” but, not expecting the flanking Cassidy, places it in a disadvantageous position, leaving the team open to “Deadeye.” As Cassidy finally fires off his ultimate, he picks off 5 enemies earning him Play of the Game.

While this tactic is used in high ranks when Symmetra and Cassidy are played together, what makes this video remarkable is that it was likely incidental. As Kiethavemezo captions the video, the Symmetra “wasn’t even in coms with us!” This kind of play usually requires a lot of coordination on voice chat, as the Cassidy would need to specify where and when to drop Symmetra's useful Teleport; however, from the video, it appears that Symmetra intended to reach the balcony by herself, and Cassidy just happened to follow her with his ultimate.

Symmetra hasn’t been a popular hero choice since Double Shield dominated the metagame; starting out as a support hero, she was significantly reworked in 2018 and moved to a damage role, making it clear that Blizzard was at a loss with what to do with her. While Symmetra works well with heroes like Cassidy and Bastion, flanking with her “Teleport,” her own damage output is fairly poor.

As her popularity diminishes, chosen only in 0.53% of Grandmaster games on PC according to Overbuff, her utility as a hero becomes more and more reliant on her “Teleport” and “Photon Barrier” ultimate ability. As Overwatch 2 promises brand-new heroes and changes to existing ones, Symmetra players can hope that new changes make her just as impactful as Kiethavemezo’s clip shows she can be.

Overwatch is available for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
