Despite the content supposedly starting to roll out in 2023, Overwatch 2 fans do not know much about PvE. Early showings indicated that the mode would be expansive, featuring massive skill trees for the various heroes as well as hundreds of hero missions, which are the equivalent of side quests. Details on the story have been a lot more vague, though, as players only know that they will be stopping a second Omnic Crisis.

Thanks to the reveal and addition of Ramattra to the hero roster, Overwatch 2 fans now have a good idea of why the Omnics are attacking again, and having a proper villain to fight against is exciting. However, it seems like Blizzard is planning to insert some extra lore for Ramattra instead of making him a behind-the-scenes figure that only appears as a final boss. This extra story will also incorporate Zenyatta, which is something players have been hoping to see for a long time.

Overwatch 2 is Set To Provide Some Much-Needed Zenyatta Lore

Zenyatta Orbs of Harmony and Destruction

Since his lore is so limited, Zenyatta deserves an animated short, comic, or short story more than any other hero in the Overwatch universe. While nearly every member of the roster has had some proper time to shine either in-game or through external lore material, little is known about Zenyatta. A Shambali monk, his only story significance thus far has been mentoring Genji and helping him control his rage.

However, as shown through Ramattra’s conversations with Zenyatta, the closeness between the two Omnics is clear. It also seems like it could be a vital part of the Overwatch 2 campaign. Viewing themselves as brothers, Zenyatta could be the one person that can talk Ramattra down from his violent path and a war on humans. Alternatively, if Ramattra has weaknesses for Overwatch to exploit, Zenyatta would be a go-to source of information and provide tips on how to defeat him.

In the lead-up to Ramattra’s release, Blizzard released a series of videos that dove into the character’s lore, design, and abilities. In the final video, lead narrative director Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie revealed that at least some parts of the PvE campaign will focus on Ramattra and Zenyatta’s dynamic. This is exciting, as it means that dialogue will not be the only way their bond is explored. Further, it means Zenyatta will get some much-needed lore and Ramattra could undergo proper character development.

Overwatch 2 Could Have More Exciting Interactions in Store

Genji and Mercy

Though the concept of Ramattra and Zenyatta-centric PvE content is appealing, its existence suggests that players could be in for more exciting pairings throughout the campaign. For instance, players could experience a mission as the Junkers, with Roadhog, Junker Queen, Junkrat, and Wrecking Ball making up the lineup. Given the Queen’s hatred for Junkrat, the dialogue would surely be interesting. This is just one of many examples, however, as there are a lot of interesting dynamics within the Overwatch universe that are worth exploring in PvE missions.

Lucio’s family has ties to the Vishkar corporation, which would make a team-up with Symmetra exciting. Mercy and Genji’s potential romance guarantees their dynamic would be fun to see for an entire mission, while Genji and Hanzo are in need of a serious discussion and a team-up. Ana and Pharah can repair their relationship in a mission, Soldier 76 and Reaper can go head-to-head, Torbjorn could teach his daughter Brigitte some important lessons, and so on. With Blizzard confirming there will be content that explores Zenyatta and Ramattra’s dynamic, there is good reason to believe that the same thing will be done with other heroes.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
