Blizzard has released a brand-new in-game animated short for Overwatch 2 Damage hero Sojourn that sets up the PvE story missions coming as part of the big Invasion update on August 10. The PvE story missions will finally see story content and cutscenes in Overwatch 2 itself, but for years, Blizzard has been telling the hero shooter's story through comic books, short stories, and some gorgeous animated shorts.

The Overwatch 2 animated shorts feature some movie-quality animation and have either focused on a specific hero or have expanded on important events in the game's lore. Overwatch 2 animated shorts were once released on a fairly regular basis, but they stopped around the same time that Blizzard stopped releasing substantial new content for the original game to focus on the sequel instead. Since the launch of Overwatch 2 in early access, fans have been treated to an animated short about Junker Queen, another about Kiriko, and now finally one that's all about Sojourn.

The latest Overwatch 2 animated short shows Sojourn seemingly living a quiet life after leaving the titular Overwatch team. However, she's thrust back into the chaos after Null Sector invades Toronto. In typical Overwatch 2 animated short fashion, the animation provides some insight into who Sojourn is as a character and features some slick action sequences for fans to check out. Those interested can watch it now in-game.

What is especially interesting about this animated short is that it leads into one of the Overwatch 2 PvE missions. It's been confirmed that one of the Overwatch 2 PvE story missions takes place in Toronto and features Sojourn as a primary character. It's unclear how much time passes between the end of this animated short and the beginning of Sojourn's mission, but fans will have to wait to play the PvE missions for themselves to find out.

The first batch of three Overwatch 2 PvE missions drop on August 10 as part of the Invasion update. The massive update will add Overwatch 2's first-ever PvE story missions as part of a $15 bundle, and it will also include a brand-new Support hero and the new Flashpoint game mode. Blizzard has remained quiet on when fans might see the new Support hero in action, but it has given fans a look at the two Flashpoint maps that will be making their debut with the August 10 Invasion update.

While Overwatch 2 fans wait for the Invasion Update, they can check out this Sojourn animated short and revisit the game's previous animated shorts to catch up on the story.

Overwatch 2 is out now in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
