Overwatch 2 will receive a mid-season matchmaking mechanics update in the coming weeks. With some time passed since the release of Season 3, the Overwatch 2 team is still hard at work fine-tuning the sequel to its competitive hero shooter.

Season 3 of Overwatch 2 arrived on February 7, bringing along some of the community's most-requested features and fixes. With an updated map pool, several tweaks to the in-game economy, and changes to ranked mode and matchmaking, some players are relieved with the direction the game appears to be headed, especially after a somewhat rocky start for the Overwatch sequel. Also included with the release of Season 3 is the new Antarctic Peninsula control map, the well-regarded Ultimate Valentine's event, upcoming Pachi Marchi event, and a generous smattering of new cosmetics across the in-game store and revamped battle pass.

Jared Neuss, an executive producer on the Overwatch 2 team, recently announced via Twitter that additional changes to matchmaking are imminent. While the current changes were a step in the right direction, it would appear that the developers feel there is more work to do in its skill-based matchmaking algorithm. No precise details were given regarding the changes being made, but the end result is creating better parity across its normal and ranked modes for a more competitive and fulfilling gameplay experience. The response on Twitter was fairly positive, with fans encouraged by Blizzard's priorities to get Overwatch 2 into a solid state where players from all skill levels can find fair and functioning matches. More will be known soon as Season 3 of Overwatch 2 continues to roll out its midseason updates.

With the commitment from Blizzard to churn out new content for Overwatch 2 at a nine-week pace, many players speculate the release of Season 4 to be on or around April 10. Since Season 3 was Overwatch 2's first season without a new hero, many players have their eyes set on the upcoming season, with its major details still shrouded in mystery. Players do know that the new character will fill the support role, but nothing else is set in stone.

The development team has listened to feedback as players continue to struggle to climb the divisions of Overwatch 2's ranked mode, and is actively addressing the issue and others like it at an improving rate. While valid criticisms remain, Overwatch 2 continues to evolve in ways that forecast a bright future for the game.

Overwatch 2 is out now in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
