  • The new PvE Story Missions in Overwatch 2 are extremely difficult, with over 98% of attempts on Legendary difficulty resulting in failure.
  • Despite controversy and downsizing of the PvE content, the flagship Story Missions have been largely successful and enjoyed by many players.
  • Overwatch 2 is excited to apply and expand on the level of difficulty in future co-op content based on the success of Season 6: Invasion.

Overwatch 2 just revealed that more than 98% of attempts to complete the new PvE Story Missions on Legendary difficulty have ended in failure. These new Overwatch 2 PvE missions are surprisingly difficult and will influence how Blizzard designs future co-op content.

Season 6: Invasion is Overwatch 2’s latest update. Its largest batch of seasonal content to date, Season 6 introduced a new hero, PvP mode, and the official end of Overwatch 2’s Early Access period. However, one of the biggest parts of the new season was the advent of permanent PvE missions in Overwatch 2.

Aaron Keller, Overwatch 2’s game director, recently put out a blog post talking about Season 6. In the post, Keller was delighted to share some details about the Legendary difficulty of the new Story Missions. “These missions on Legendary are hard. Super hard,” he said. “Most people can't complete them at this difficulty, and those that did had to devise custom strategies and team comps to get past the hardest encounters.” According to Keller, only 1.6% of Legendary Gothenburg runs were completed, and only .7% of attempts to beat Legendary Toronto were successful.

Keller himself enjoyed watching players attempt to beat these challenging missions and congratulated those who were successful. “If you’re a content creator who completed Legendary and you’re reading this post, pat yourself on the back. You were great entertainment!” What’s more, it seems Overwatch 2 is happy to see how the different difficulties of missions felt. “We feel like we learned something with the level of difficulty and are excited to apply and expand on it for future Co-op content,” Keller said. Hopefully, this means future PvE content will build upon the success of Overwatch 2 Season 6: Invasion.

Unsurprisingly, the long-awaited and highly-controversial Story Missions have been at the center of much discussion. Players have been waiting for the PvE missions since they were first announced with Overwatch 2 in 2019. Unfortunately, Blizzard’s recent decision to downsize PvE has sparked no small amount of controversy, causing fans to review bomb Overwatch 2 into becoming the lowest-rated game on Steam.

Even so, Overwatch 2’s flagship PvE Story Missions have been largely a success. Many core players have enjoyed them, and agree they have the makings of something great. The missions aren’t perfect, and some say they felt the parts of the original vision that were cut away. That said, the stories and cinematics are charming, and though the missions themselves don’t have a huge degree of replayability, Overwatch 2’s Underworld PvE mode sets a promising precedent for future co-op content.

Overwatch 2’s Invasion bundle gives players access to all three Story Missions, plus the Underworld horde-like co-op mode, for $15. This bundle also gives players 1000 Overwatch coins, which can be used to get the Season 6 Battle Pass. Experts interested in giving them a shot should try and see if they can complete the Story Missions on Legendary and join the elite players who have mastered them so far.

Overwatch 2 is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
