Overwatch 2 has announced a massive new update called Invasion, scheduled to drop for the hero shooter on August 10. Since its free-to-play launch last year, Blizzard has constantly added new content to Overwatch 2 to keep fans engaged as well as bring in new players. The next Overwatch 2 update is currently scheduled for June 13, at which point Blizzard will be kicking off Season 5 of the game.

Overwatch 2 Season 5 is expected to be a smaller season when compared to previous ones. There will be no new hero or major new map. However, Overwatch 2 Season 5 will still have a Battle Pass full of unlockables, as well as special events like Questwatch and the Summer Games. A bit later on, Overwatch 2 fans can look forward to a more substantial update in the form of the August 10 Invasion update.

Set to be Overwatch 2's biggest content drop to date, the August 10 Invasion update will coincide with Season 6 and finally see the addition of story missions to the game. While the Overwatch 2 Hero Mode has been canceled, the hero shooter will still be telling a linear story through special co-op missions that see the Overwatch team fighting back against Null Sector. Story missions are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Invasion update, though.

When the Invasion update lands for Overwatch 2 on August 10, fans can look forward to the introduction of a new game mode called Flashpoint, a Hero Mastery mode, a co-op event, a Firing Range, and more. It's unclear if this will also count as Overwatch 2's graduation from early access game to a full title, but Blizzard should provide more clarification on that front in the near future.

All of this was announced at the Xbox Showcase event through a new trailer that gave fans a look at some of these new features coming to Overwatch 2. Perhaps the most exciting bit came at the very end of the trailer, though, where Blizzard teased a brand-new Overwatch 2 hero. Overwatch 2 is adding a new Support hero in Season 6, though this is the first time fans have gotten a glimpse at them. The image was purposefully blurry, but it looks like the new Support hero is a woman with a cape and what appears to be a sword or some kind of railgun. Overwatch 2 fans will have to hang tight for more information on that front.

Overwatch 2 is available in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
