The future of Overwatch 2 has been heavily debated by its playerbase for some time now, though recent news has several fans cautiously optimistic. The last few weeks have been particularly taxing for the franchise after Blizzard announced the Hero Talents for PvE were no longer in development. Some fans took to uninstalling the game completely while others expressed their disappointment by throwing Overwatch 2 ranked games. While Season 5 of Overwatch 2 is nearly here, Blizzard is focusing a lot of its attention on Season 6 in spite of it being nearly two months away. This isn't to say that Season 5 is being ignored since the marketing department has been sharing details on Season 5's fantasy-themed Battle Pass, but a lot of the excitement is being generated around the season past that. With a new PvP mode, training challenges, story missions, and a new Support hero, Season 6 appears to be fully stacked.RELATED: One Mistake Could Completely Kill Interest in Overwatch 2's PvE Story Missions

Overwatch 2's New Support Could be Melee-Based

The recent content roadmap for Overwatch 2 slated a new support hero for Season 6, so it was expected that more information would be revealed near the end of July or early August. Instead, fans received an early glimpse of the character at the end of the new Overwatch 2 Invasion trailer that debuted during the Xbox Showcase on June 11. The figure is purposefully blurred against a brilliant sun-lit backdrop though it appears they are wearing some sort of flower crown on their head.

According to a tweet from Kyle Disanjh, a Senior Animator at Blizzard, this new hero goes by she/her pronouns. The sun emoji at the end of the tweet may be a reference to her lore which was already teased to have ties to Peru. In the brief clip shown of the next Overwatch 2 Support, it's undetermined whether she is holding a large gun or a giant sword. If she's holding a sword, she could be a melee-based character like Brigitte and her mace.

While having another melee-focused Support could be quite fun for some players, this could turn out to be a double-edged sword in the end. Overwatch 2 needs another Support that can deal with flying heroes such as Pharah and Echo, especially now that the game has shifted from 6v6 to 5v5. With one less tank to heal, Supports have been led to do more damage in order to defend themselves or make plays to alter the team fight.

If this new sun-based Support hero is mostly limited to short-range brawls, she would be virtually defenseless against airborne attacks. However, some fans are theorizing that the new hero will be able to fly on her own or at the very least boost herself into the air like Baptiste. It's unclear if the elongated shadows behind the character are part of a cape or part of a set of wings that could be similar to Mercy.

Until Blizzard decides to reveal more information about Season 6 and its newest Support character, fans will simply have to wait. In the meantime, Season 5 is still showing promise with much-needed buffs to Lifeweaver and tweaks for other characters like Junker Queen, Mei, and Cassidy.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
