The recently released Overwatch 2 is already about to enter its second spate of seasonal content, and fans are more than excited to become fully acquainted with it. The in-game seasons of the title bring about brand-new battle passes as well as key changes to hero rosters and available maps and modes, with a plethora of other new implementations also being associated with them.
One of the most high-profile aspects of any season within Overwatch 2 concerns which playable hero will receive their very own Mythic skin. With the new tank hero Junker Queen being the recipient of Season 2's Mythic skin, fans are beginning to wonder if a precedent may now be set going into future seasons.
Overwatch 2: Season 2
Season 2 of Overwatch 2 is set to officially begin on December 6, and it possesses some interesting additions that are set to shake up the title quite significantly. Considering how Overwatch 2 has consistently faced criticism for the deep similarities that it shares with its popular 2016 predecessor, these seasonal updates are a perfect way for the newer title to maintain its audience and further set itself apart from the identity of the original Overwatch.
For example, Season 2 is set to introduce a brand-new tank hero named Ramattra to Overwatch 2, whose abilities are a wild mix of several different aspects of Overwatch gameplay. Alongside this, Season 2 is set to change the map pool of the title while introducing a new map named Shambali Monastery. As a part of the overt influence of Greek mythology in the themes of Season 2, a new mode called Battle of Olympus will also become available for a limited time during the season, granting certain heroes the additional powers of Greek Gods in-game.
Overwatch 2's Season 2 Mythic Skin
Mythic skins are a brand-new form of content in Overwatch 2 and take character customization to a whole new level. This category of skin is considered the rarest in the game, being made up of different unique layers that can be customized in color and appearance by the player. The first Mythic skin in Overwatch 2 came in Season 1, where the popular DPS hero Genji received a very eye-catching Mythic that was well-received by fans.
With only one Mythic skin being made available per season, the allocation of which hero receives the skin is a huge point of contention within the community. It was recently made known that the new tank hero Junker Queen will be the recipient of Season 2's Mythic skin, and this potentially has some interesting permutations for what form subsequent Mythic skins may take.
In-keeping with the aforementioned Greek mythology theme, Junker Queen's Mythic skin takes inspiration from Zeus, giving the hero a glowing lightning aura as well as a toga inspired outfit. The interest surrounding this choice stems from Junker Queen's newer nature as a hero, with many fans wondering if more recent characters will get priority in Mythic skin choice going forward.
Despite older heroes having a clear need for more varied and dynamic skins, it would not be surprising if subsequent Overwatch 2 seasons saw other new heroes receive the limelight of a Mythic skin. From a business perspective, this makes newer heroes more attractive to players, while also incentivizing players to engage with a season's battle pass to unlock fresh heroes for gameplay use. Though it remains to be seen whether this will be the case for future Mythic skins, the attention that a Mythic skin can bring to newer heroes is surely going to be something Blizzard considers going forward.
