With Overwatch 2 being a free-to-play, live service title, it embraces the increasingly popular concept of seasonal updates that regularly bring small batches of content to enjoy. Each season has a theme, and while players have been critical of the battle passes not fully reflecting the main topic of the season, the overall combination between certain pass skins and marketplace outfits makes it clear. While Season 1 highlighted Cyberpunk cosmetics, Season 2 is all about Greek mythology - and it could inspire future content.

The price of Overwatch 2 cosmetics and the progression toward unlocking them remains a hot button issue in the community, but most agree that the skins featured in Season 2 are top-notch. Medusa Widowmaker, Poseidon Ramattra, and Hades Pharah are full of detail, while Zeus Junker Queen looks extremely intimidating and makes for a solid Mythic. With so many different mythologies out there, though, Overwatch 2 should explore some other lore going forward.

Overwatch 2’s Greek Mythology Event Could Be The Tip of the Iceberg

Norse mythology seems like a no-brainer for a similar event, especially with games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and God of War Ragnarok making it more prominent in recent years. Though Blizzard has dabbled with a few Norse skins like Sigrun Mercy and Draugr Reinhardt, there are for more opportunities for cosmetics based on the mythology. Though the community has gotten the ball rolling with a Berserker Roadhog skin concept, it is hard not to think about other possibilities.

Surtr Reaper seems like an excellent route to take, with a fiery skin for Gabriel Reyes allowing him to embody the fire giant. Fans have requested Torbjorn and Reinhardt Thor skins for years due to their hammers, so allowing one to become the God of Thunder would be wise. Sombra makes sense for a gender-bent Loki outfit due to her sassy personality and love for deception, while Sigma’s age makes him a viable candidate for Odin. Brigitte as Freya, Cassidy as Baldur, and Heimdall Soldier 76 would all work too - with Soldier’s Ultimate able to parody Heimdall’s sight.

Beyond Norse mythology, Egyptian skins are something that would make for an exciting theme. Thanks to Pharah and Ana’s Anubis and Bastet skins, as well as Zenyatta’s Ra skin, Blizzard already has a strong start on this mythology. However, a Horus skin for the flying Echo or bird-loving Bastion would be interesting, as would a Reaper skin based on Set or a Mercy design inspired by Isis. Pulling from Celtic, Aztec, and other cultures would gaurantee more standout skins.

Outside of cosmetics, Overwatch 2 Season 2 is bringing a new LTM that will place god-like powers in the hands of players. Dubbed Battle for Olympus, players will get to fight around Ilios’ pillars, a fitting setting for a big battle between the Greek gods. Fortunately, Overwatch 2 already has settings that would work for other mythology-based events. An expanded version of Blizzard World’s tavern starting room could be fun for a Norse mode, while Temple of Anubis could get a slight makeover for an Egyptian mode.

Obviously, Blizzard should take a break from mythology Seasons for a while once the current one wraps up. However, in a year, players could be eager for an LTM and skins based on a different mythology type. This would be a great way to keep whatever gameplay loop Battle for Olympus has feeling fresh, as the same rules can be used alongside new gods and a different arena. With past Overwatch events getting stale after a few years, the Greek mythology event can be consistently refreshed by hopping to a different mythology every 12 months. Since there are so many mythologies to adapt, there is near-limitless potential for skins and gameplay mechanics.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
