Highlights

  • Overwatch 2 introduced mythic skins, a new tier of rare cosmetics that surpass legendary skins, coinciding with each season's theme.
  • Mercy's enduring popularity could make her the next hero to receive a highly sought-after mythic skin.
  • Supports like Mercy are set to receive a mythic skin every three seasons, making it likely that she will eventually get a skin that competes with the iconic Pink Mercy.

When Overwatch 2 debuted in October 2022, it marked more than just a switch from 6v6 to 5v5. It also introduced a transition from loot boxes to a battle pass model. This switch, while controversial, also introduced a new tier of rare skins deemed mythic, surpassing the previous highest rarity of legendary skins.

Mythic skins have become a staple of each season in Overwatch 2, with colors and features that often coincide with the current season's theme. Genji's Cyber Demon mythic skin, for example, perfectly matched Season 1's neon cyberpunk aesthetic. With only one hero per season able to receive a mythic, it's a highly sought-after distinction. Despite this, it seems that one particular hero is bound to get a mythic skin, no matter the odds.

Overwatch 2 is home to several interesting characters and storylines, but despite this, Blizzard has yet to take advantage of one obvious opening.

Overwatch Could Be Waiting to Release Its Best Mythic

A Mercy Mythic is Overwatch 2's Secret Weapon

It's no secret that Mercy has been a consistently popular character in the Overwatch franchise since her introduction in 2016. Some players have even jokingly suggested that her widespread appeal makes Mercy a favorite of Blizzard, a sentiment fueled by her strong presence in the game's lore and marketing material.

With the playerbase's keen interest in visually appealing skins, a mythic Mercy skin could be seen as Blizzard's 'break-in-case-of-emergency' plan to generate excitement around a future season.

Over the years, dedicated artists have created compelling Mercy skin concepts that have the potential to become a reality one day. This was demonstrated in 2023 when a 2021 fan-made Lifeguard Mercy skin was introduced to the game, albeit with some alterations. With boundless ideas at play, it seems not a matter of "if" but "when" Mercy will receive her mythic skin.

Mercy Could Get a Skin That Finally Tops Pink Mercy

Given Mercy's enduring popularity among both Mercy mains and support enthusiasts in Overwatch 2, releasing new cosmetics, particularly a mythic skin, could be a strategic move for Blizzard to capitalize on this strong player interest. In a similar vein, the playerbase has noted that she gets at least one new skin every season, though some of these Mercy skins have been controversial. Regardless, if her mythic skin is done well, it's possible Mercy will finally get a skin that can compete with the likes of 2018's Pink Mercy.

Fortunately, the odds of this happening are quite high. Supports are targeted to get a mythic every three seasons and there are currently only 10 supports in the game. While a mythic for the new hero, code-named Space Ranger, in Season 12 is possible, it seems more logical for Blizzard to prioritize a long-standing character with an established fanbase. Considering that Kiriko, Ana, and Moira have already received mythic skins, this only leaves the following, excluding Space Ranger:

  • Illari
  • Lucio
  • Zenyatta
  • Mercy
  • Lifeweaver
  • Brigitte
  • Baptiste

To avoid potential criticism like that of Orisa's Grand Beast skin, Mercy's inevitable mythic skin should offer a diverse range of customization options. Luckily, it seems Blizzard is aware of this criticism since Executive Producer Jared Neuss commented in December that Overwatch 2 wants to improve its mythic skins. Hopefully, when Mercy's mythic skin debuts, it'll allow for a high degree of personalization and player expression.
