As fans eagerly anticipated, Blizzard, the developer and publisher of Overwatch 2, unveiled the origin story trailer for the Tank hero Mauga at the thrilling BlizzCon 2023. Mauga's presence in the world of Overwatch had been teased ever since his appearance in the Baptiste short story, "What You Left Behind," and the anticipation grew even further when Blizzard introduced the Samoa map for Season 7.

Although Mauga's abilities had leaked before BlizzCon 2023, the event offered the first in-game look at how these abilities work. Mauga is equipped with two powerful chainguns, each designed for a specific purpose. One chaingun specializes in incendiary damage, leaving a trail of fiery destruction, while the other is optimized for precision, delivering critical hits with pinpoint accuracy. Mauga's Ultimate ability, aptly named "Cage Fight," unleashes a powerful cylindrical fighting ring, effectively trapping opponents and giving him an edge in close combat.

Blizzard kicks off BlizzCon 2023 with some major reveals for popular hero shooter Overwatch 2, including two new heroes coming in 2024.

Who Is Overwatch 2's Mauga?

Mauga, a formidable figure from Samoa, often conceals his true intelligence behind the facade of a "big dumb brute." In the Samoan language, "Mauga" means mountains, a name that carries significance in his history. His past is closely connected to his time in Talon, where he established a significant partnership with the Support hero Baptiste in Overwatch 2. Together, they executed numerous missions, with Mauga openly acknowledging Baptiste as "the best medic in Talon." Mauga has also earned comparisons to a "demon" due to his ability to swiftly transition between light-hearted and darker facets of his personality. Regarding the Overwatch 2 cinematic featuring Mauga, it begins with him relaxing on a ship, listening to music, and sipping a drink.

Then Mauga reflects on his troubled past, including a fiery battle where he gets knocked out. In a hospital, he briefly loses control, but then gains a new perspective on life, valuing self-care and building connections with friends. In a flashback, he displays his ruthless side and allies with Talon members. In the present, chaos surrounds him, and Mauga emphasizes his work-hard-play-hard attitude. The cinematic ends with Overwatch 2's Mauga inviting viewers to join in the fun.

Furthermore, during BlizzCon 2023, the developer also unveiled some effective strategies to counter the newly revealed Tank hero Mauga. According to Blizzard, two standout options for countering Mauga on the Tank front are D.Va and Sigma. Mauga possesses a crucial ability known as the Berserker passive, which grants him healing when he scores critical hits. Both D.Va's Defense Matrix and Sigma's Kinetic Grasp excel at intercepting Mauga's chaingun projectiles, effectively denying the robust new Tank hero the opportunity to heal himself.
