Overwatch 2 is currently in its fifth season of live-service content, with the sixth season on the horizon. A lot of the content from the Overwatch 2 roadmap has already begun to debut with more updates, game modes, and heroes still on the way. The player base has been cautiously optimistic about all the new upcoming changes to the hero shooter, especially since some aspects are unlike anything the game has ever seen.
August will undoubtedly be a big month for Overwatch 2, as season six will come with a new solar-powered support hero, the new Flashpoint game mode, hero mastery progression, and the long-anticipated story missions. Season five however has done well to make the game more interactive with its Questwatch events, Summer Games, and the franchises' first-ever animated miniseries titled "Genesis". With two more episodes to go in the animated shorts and Overwatch 2: Invasion coming soon, it would appear that both concepts are in the same boat.
Invasion and GENESIS Could Be a Sign of Things to Come
Game Director Aaron Keller has been consistently transparent with fans of the game via his Director's Take blogs and Twitter posts. This is a relief to some in the community since Overwatch prime was essentially abandoned in its final year of live service. One of the most recent developer blogs discussed the pricing for Overwatch 2: Invasion which was exciting but controversial due to the amount of money Blizzard was asking in return.
Still, since the franchise first came to life, people have been interested in the lore behind Overwatch 2 characters. The price tag attached to this may not deter those who are excited to see how the Null Sector invasion of the future earth pans out. PvE elements have been few and far apart since Overwatch 2 was released in October 2022, so this may be Blizzard's chance to truly flesh out the world it's been building.
Additionally, there's been great effort put into the recent animated miniseries, titled "Genesis", which proves Blizzard is delving deeper into the story elements both in-game and outside of it. While only one episode of "Genesis" has come out so far, Overwatch 2's animated series is a step in the right direction. If all three episodes are well received by the audience, fans could very well get a fully-fledged television show or film in the future. With games such as League of Legends finding success with Arcane and Cyberpunk 2077 finding renewed interest partly thanks to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, there's no reason that Overwatch 2 can't benefit as well.
If Blizzard is actively watching to see how well "Genesis" performs with its audience, it's safe to assume that Overwatch 2: Invasion will be right there alongside it. While there have been PvE elements in the past, with Starwatch: Galactic Rescue being one of them, none have been advertised to be at the level that the future story missions are promised to be. However, in an interview with Executive Producer Jared Neuss from content creator Emongg's stream, it was said that there won't be any more PvE missions until at least 2024.
Beyond Overwatch 2: Invasion being released in separate parts, fans may not see the same type of content for several months, if at all depending on audience reception. As such, it seems the potential for another animated series and more is very much dependent on how much people like them. For those who enjoy the Overwatch comics and stories, the next few seasons of Overwatch 2 would likely be a good time to voice such opinions.
