Overwatch 2 has already introduced two new characters to the mix, and both have proven to be huge hits with fans. Sojourn’s deadly railgun makes her a nightmare to deal with if an accurate player is controlling her, while Junker Queen’s aggressive style makes her a perfect fit for the new 5v5 meta.

While both of these heroes have been popular with Overwatch 2 fans, gamers are excited to see what the final launch hero will be like. Fortunately, with a few details known about their lore and the decision to position this character as a Support hero, it is possible to get a general idea of what the hero could play like once they are finally introduced to the Overwatch community.

Overwatch 2’s Fox Hero Lore Makes Their Primary Weapon Clear

Overwatch 2 fans were first teased about the Fox hero with the release of the Kanezaka map, as the Deathmatch location includes a graffiti mural with plenty of fox tributes. This comes after insiders mentioned seeing silhouettes of new Overwatch 2 heroes at a press event, with one of the shadowy figures having a fox companion. Beyond this, a bit of lore was released about the person who will likely become this long-awaited hero.

The Overwatch 2 short story about the Yamagami family has been pointed out by many as a potential hero teaser, as the lore drop would be very random otherwise. Asa Yamagami is a swordmaster responsible for training Genji, while her husband Toshiro created powerful blades. Unfortunately, Toshiro was captured by one of the Shimada Clan’s rivals, the Hashimoto Clan, and forced to make weapons. Back at the Yamagami's swordshop, several shipments were being stolen, with Asa writing to her husband and saying she will make an offering to the Fox Shrine to hopefully get some answers.

Fans have theorized that this offering resulted in Asa getting fox-like powers that she then used to save her husband, while others believe that Asa and Toshiro’s unnamed daughter could have inherited the powers. Regardless, it seems likely that whoever the Fox hero is, their main weapon will be a sword of some kind given the Yamagami family's expertise in this area. With the Fox hero set to be a Support character, having another melee-focused healer like Brigitte could be intriguing. Further, a sword as a primary weapon could result in a deep melee moveset, letting players do far more than they can with Genji’s Dragonblade.

Overwatch 2’s Fox Companion Could Provide Support

As shown in Overwatch 2’s gameplay trailer, this still-unnamed fox hero will have an ethereal blue companion that resembles Hanzo’s dragons in terms of its design. This fox will likely be the main source of healing for this character, as players may be able to command it so that it heals an ally of their choice similar to Zenyatta’s orb of healing. Beyond that, the fox may be able to pick up health packs sitting around the map, carrying one in its mouth and bringing it back to the player so that they can refill their health. The fox could be tied to the new hero's ultimate ability, too, possibly making copies of itself that fly into teammates to instantly restore an entire team's health and give them regeneration for several seconds.

With Overwatch 2’s fox hero teased for the next beta through the “what does the fox say” message, fans should not have long to wait before they get to try the character out. After many months of teasers, hopefully the character lives up to the hype. Fortunately, with this figure having an adorable spectral fox and being a much-needed addition to the Support roster, all the pieces seem to be in place for a popular new hero.

Overwatch 2 launches in early access on October 4 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
