The Enigma in Overwatch 2 has finally been confirmed to be none other than John Cena. John Cena himself has been teasing his potential involvement with Overwatch 2 on social media, and now the cat is officially out of the bag.

As part of a unique marketing campaign for Overwatch 2's Invasion update, Blizzard has had famous Twitch streamers like Shroud, Keydae, and Scump get "hacked" by a new hacker character named The Enigma. The hacking efforts have culminated in the reveal of a new trailer for Overwatch 2 that confirms The Enigma's identity.

It's unclear exactly how big of a role John Cena's Enigma character will play in Overwatch 2. However, Blizzard has said that fans can expect to see more of John Cena as The Enigma between now and August 10. There will also be an opportunity for fans to "actively participate" in the event, so it will be interesting to see what happens. This is a far cry from John Cena becoming a playable character in Overwatch 2 as some fans might have guessed when he started teasing his potential involvement with the hero shooter, but it's still possible that the character will become a bigger part of the game's lore.

If The Enigma does become a more active part of the Overwatch 2 narrative, some might find the character somewhat redundant since the hero shooter already has a hacker character. After all, Overwatch 2's resident hacker Sombra has been in the game since 2016. In fact, she was the second post-launch character added to the Overwatch 2 roster after Support hero Ana. Sombra has undergone some major changes over the years, but her kit has always revolved around sneaking into the back line and making quick escapes.

And while some fans may be somewhat disappointed to find out that the John Cena teases haven't resulted in him becoming a playable character in the game, the good news is that there is still a new character on the way for Overwatch 2. Blizzard has kept quiet about the new Overwatch 2 Support hero and what they may entail, but they are expected to join the roster with the Invasion update on August 10. With the Invasion update set to launch in less than a week's time, fans should learn more about the character sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, fans can check out the new Sojourn animated short in Overwatch 2 as they prepare for the Invasion update and everything it's bringing to the table.

Overwatch 2 is out now in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
