Overwatch 2 has temporarily removed Antarctic Peninsula from all modes due to performance issues when certain heroes are played on this map. Season 5 of Overwatch 2 has begun two days ago, and players have received new fantasy-themed cosmetics, challenges, and the returning "On Fire" mechanic. The new season update has also introduced balance changes to heroes like Cassidy, Roadhog, Hanzo, and Junker Queen.

Apart from a batch of content included in Season 5, Blizzard has announced that the long-promised story content will be added to Overwatch 2 this summer, allowing players to team up with friends to complete these narrative missions. However, it was also confirmed that they won't be free to play when the Season 6 update launches on August 10 as Overwatch 2 players will have to purchase a $15 bundle to gain permanent access to the new story content. This bundle will also include a Sojourn legendary skin, 1,000 Overwatch coins, and access to Sojourn in PvP modes.

Blizzard has also shared a list of all currently tracked issues affecting Overwatch 2, saying that Antarctic Peninsula has been disabled due to performance issues when certain heroes are on this map. The hero in reference is believed to be Mercy, who had an exploit that allowed players to use their pistol and staff simultaneously on the Paraiso map. Even worse, this game-breaking Mercy exploit caused unbearable performance issues for everyone else in the lobby. The developers have already removed the Paraiso map from all modes to prevent some Mercy players from ruining other people's games.

Overwatch 2 Disables Antarctic Peninsula Map

Antarctic Peninsula is a snow-themed control map in Overwatch 2, which features unique sights like an underground drilling station, an ice-breaker ship, and players can also explore a large research station as well as view the native inhabitants of the Antarctic Circle, like penguins and fish. Paraiso, on the other hand, is a vibrant hybrid map taking place in one of the most beautiful cities in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. Players must escort a parade float through Rio's colorful suburbs and be prepared for close-range firefights.

Hopefully, performance issues with the Paraiso and the Antarctic Peninsula maps will be ironed out as quickly as possible though it's currently unclear if they will be added back to the rotation this season. The developers also mentioned that they are aware of bugs affecting the Team Radio feature and Kiriko's Swift Step, while also investigating an issue with some players not receiving their competitive titles from Overwatch 2 Season 4.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
