The game director for Overwatch 2 almost leaked an in-progress campaign map during a recent community broadcast on Twitch. Though no footage of the map was revealed, players almost got an accidental sneak peek at the upcoming PvE campaign for Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller recently appeared on an official community broadcast alongside art director Dion Rogers and community manager Andy Belford. The purpose of the broadcast was to give players a behind-the-scenes look at how Overwatch 2 builds its maps.
However, as the broadcast was starting up, the Overwatch 2 developers ran into a few technical problems. As they were getting things organized, Keller tried to find the files he was looking for, admitting he meant to refresh himself on what he was trying to do before the stream. As he tried to open the correct map, his jaw dropped, saying “Oh… I don’t think this is it. Oh my god, I’m glad we’re not streaming this. This is a campaign map. That’d have been really bad!”
The Overwatch 2 developers erupted into nervous laughter at the narrowly-avoided incident, with Belford only half-joking as he said they would be changing the subject very quickly. It was lucky for Keller–and unlucky for players–that he was not sharing his screen, or they would have given players an unintentional sneak peek at a map from the upcoming Overwatch 2 story campaign.
Besides Keller’s narrowly-avoided leak, the stream was a great success. Players enjoyed getting a look behind the development curtain, and they appreciated the unscripted nature of the casual community broadcast. By the end of the stream, players had helped the developers build a ridiculous, fish-filled custom Overwatch 2 map that Belford lovingly referred to as “cursed.” Players who tuned in hope Overwatch 2 will continue to do similar streams–though they can’t help but wonder if it might be more careful in the future to prevent similar close calls.
Nevertheless, Overwatch 2 fans won’t have to wait long to see the map Keller almost leaked first hand. Though Overwatch 2 has not given a solid release date for its PvE campaign, players can expect it in 2023. Only snippets have been available for how its PvE content will look, but Overwatch 2's PvP scene is going strong, with its second season adding the tank hero, Ramattra. The Omnic terrorist will reportedly play a large role in the Overwatch 2 campaign, so fans of the new character can look forward to seeing more of him soon. Once the holidays are over, hopefully, Overwatch 2 can officially–and intentionally–start showing off footage from the upcoming campaign.
