With the much-anticipated Overwatch 2 on the horizon, Blizzard has been actively teasing upcoming changes and updates to the Overwatch sequel. Following the recent ping system announcement, fans are already worried about how these new additions may negatively impact the gaming experience. Now, Overwatch 2 developers have responded to these concerns.

Announced back in 2019, Overwatch 2 has been building up a fair amount of excitement among the fanbase, and Blizzard's recent updates on the upcoming title are building up further anticipation. One of the studio's latest announcements is the Overwatch 2 ping system, similar to the one in Apex Legends. But fans are already showing concern over how this will be implemented, specifically with how it will impact Sombra players. The reason is that a ping system combined with Sombra's invisibility ability could potentially offer an unfair advantage to players, making Sombra an oppressive option.

Responding to the issues raised, developers at Blizzard shared in a statement that they agree Sombra is the character that will be most affected by the ping system, and that "she’s the main reason for a lot of the nuance in the Ping System." It goes on to state that since players are only able to place a single ping at a time, Sombra players can only track one foe accurately. "Sombra can already effectively track one enemy’s position now by informing their team that “the Widowmaker is always directly in front of me”, because of how we show silhouettes through surfaces," the statement adds.

Developers also assure that they are ready to make necessary changes should certain characters feel overpowered while using the ping system. The statement claims that a few changes have already been made to Sombra based on feedback from the Alpha and that they have "some other ideas in mind if Sombra+Ping feels oppressive." With the Overwatch 2 PvP Beta release on April 26, more players will get a first look at how exactly this ping system will work out in terms of characters like Sombra.

Of course, this is only one of the numerous changes Blizzard is introducing to Overwatch 2. In addition to the ping system, the studio is also working on balancing its other characters like Sojourn in light of the upcoming PvP beta. The company's recent frequency of these updates and announcements suggests that fans could potentially expect Overwatch 2 to come out sometime later this year. Although Blizzard is yet to officially announce an actual release date, the studio could likely share more details close to the beta release. Regardless, fans will finally be able to get a better glimpse of Overwatch 2 next month following two years of anticipation.
