Overwatch 2 has proven to be quite popular since its release despite the lingering controversy that the game has faced since its initial announcement in 2019. Breathing new life into the hero shooter franchise, the free-to-play title has only just begun its implementation of brand-new content for fans to explore.
As many expected, this post-launch content for Overwatch 2 is largely tied in to each season of the game's battle pass, with each season having its own theme and slew of relevant content for players to enjoy. With the new season seemingly looking toward Greek mythology as its main theme, the upcoming Battle for Olympus mode appears to set a good precedent for the game moving forward.
Overwatch 2's Battle for Olympus Event
Season 2 of Overwatch 2 is set to officially begin on December 6, and will bring with it a brand-new battle pass for players to grind, as well as new skins and in-game events. On top of this, Season 2 is set to mark the introduction of a new tank hero for Overwatch 2 named Rammatra who promises to shake up the pre-existing meta of the title.
One of the most striking new implementations set to come with Season 2 is a brand-new in-game mode called Battle for Olympus. While not a lot is currently known about how exactly this event will function, there is still enough information available to get fans excited. With Olympus being the coveted home of the Gods of Greek mythology, it is clear that this upcoming mode will tie-in to the overarching themes of the season as a whole.
Reportedly, the Battle for Olympus mode will see fan-favorite Overwatch 2 heroes be imbued with god-like powers, likely being given much more destructive and all-powerful abilities beyond that of what they already possess. The Battle for Olympus event will start on January 5 and end on January 19, giving fans plenty of time to enjoy whatever Christmas-related content that Blizzard chooses to implement prior to this.
How Battle for Olympus Spells Good News For Overwatch 2's Future
It is no secret that one of the main and most consistent criticisms of Overwatch 2 is that the game shares so many similarities with its predecessor. With the anticipated PvE campaign mode of Overwatch 2 not releasing until 2023, many players are of the opinion that the game does not currently possess enough unique content to warrant its existence as a sequel.
While the title has already received a seasonal event with the recent Wrath of the Bride mode, this was a predictable follow-up to the many other Halloween Terror events that the Overwatch franchise has experienced for some time. Though it was certainly different from Junkenstein's Revenge, Wrath of the Bride was a sequel with a similar tone, style, and map instead of something completely fresh. In this way, the upcoming Battle for Olympus event in Overwatch 2 is a step in the right direction, being the first entirely unique event to come to the recently released sequel.
Many fans are hoping that this will set a future standard for the game's seasons, with each season perhaps getting its own unique event directly tied to the themes and motifs of the season in question.
