There are countless isekai anime that have been put out over the last few years. This is the one genre that never fails to show up in every new season. All of these isekai stories have their own gimmick and quirkiness that entice new viewers to follow along. Some of them turned out to be perfect, while most of them ended up wasting viewers' precious time.

One of the isekai stories that has proved itself to be unique and definitely worth the time is Overlord. Unlike other isekai anime, the main character of Overlord is actually a bad guy. He is an undead who won't feel a thing after brutally massacring tens of thousands of people. But the story is told in such a way that fans end up rooting for Ainz, the leader of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, regardless. Overlord started as a web novel written by Kugane Maruyama, and then evolved into a proper light novel, adapted into a manga series, and finally turned into a highly popular anime series. After airing its third season back in 2018, Studio Madhouse finally announced that the fourth season and an anime movie are planned to be released around July 2022. Here are all the things that you can expect from the fourth season.

What Happened at the End of Season 3

overlord anime

Before going into what will happen in season 4, it's important to briefly recount what had happened back in season 3. First, is the official formation of the Sorcerer Kingdom with Ainz Ooal Gown as its leader, the Sorcerer King. This marks the first time Ainz and the rest of the citizens of the Great Tomb of Nazarick announced their existence to the world.

The second-biggest thing is the alliance between the Sorcerer Kingdom and the Baharuth Empire. Unlike the Re-Estize Kingdom which was openly against this non-human kingdom, the calculating leader of the Baharuth Empire, Jircniv Rune Farlord El-Nix, chose to engage in a diplomatic relationship with the powerful Sorcerer Kingdom. Make no mistake, they still despise Ainz and his people, but even Jircniv has to admit the otherworldly might of the Sorcerer King.

The last important event is the annexation of the city of E-Rantel. That being said, the Sorcerer Kingdom didn't actually enter E-Rantel and take it by force. The Re-Estize Kingdom is the one that gave this important territory to the Sorcerer Kingdom. The reason is because of how Ainz single-handedly massacred tens of thousands of people in the battle of the Katze Plains. After this battle, the Sorcerer King demanded the Re-Estize Kingdom to give E-Rantel to them, and they complied.

The Fall of the Baharuth Empire

From this point on, we'll talk about the events that have appeared only in the light novels, particularly from volume 10 onwards. So expect some light spoilers here and there. As mentioned earlier, the Sorcerer Kingdom has forged a diplomatic relationship with the Baharuth Empire. However, behind the scenes, both parties try to find a way to topple each other.

Emperor Jircniv secretly contacts other nations in order to form a secret alliance, while Demiurge crafts an incredibly thorough plan in order to bring the Empire down to its knees in a matter of months. But then Ainz decided to do things his own way, and the mighty empire fell in just three days.

The Exploration of the Dwarven Kingdom

Overlord Frost Dragon light vol 11

In volume 11, Ainz's focus is shifted from the big kingdom to the nearly ruined Dwarven Kingdom. The reason why he is so interested in the dwarfs is due to their deep knowledge in Runic Magic. This is the only type of magic that is not available in the original Yggdrasil game.

In the process of procuring the knowledge and cooperation of the dwarfs, Ainz ends up having to explore their territory and take back their capital from their ultimate nemesis, the Frost Dragon. Yes, the ruler of Nazarick will have to fight dragons in this arc.

The Assault on the Roble Holy Kingdom

Overlord Demiurge light novel vol 12

Usually, every season of Overlord will adapt around three volumes of light novels. However, volume 10 and 11 has enough content in it for the whole fourth season. Not to mention the fact that the people from Madhouse have announced that the new film will cover the next arc after the Dwarven Kingdom, which is called the Paladin of the Holy Kingdom.

The fourth season may only serve as a prequel for this arc, with the majority of the story likely to be told in the movie. However, since we already talked about what will happen in the new season, we might as well talk a bit about what's going to happen in the new movie.

As the title suggests, this new arc will focus heavily on the assault on one of the biggest human kingdoms, The Roble Holy Kingdom. Talking about the details of the attack will spoil most of the story. Just know that this will be the bloodiest carnage in the series, by far. If you still haven't accepted the fact that Ainz is the bad guy in the story, this arc will grab you by the throat and force you to acknowledge his evil deeds.
