While exploration is a large part of Outward's appeal thanks to its massive open world, the versatile combat options are also note-worthy. With the recent release of the Definitive Edition, players new and old are picking up the game both to roam the world and experiment with all the weapons the game has to offer.
Outward features an expansive list of unique weapons. The weapons can be divided into two main categories main-hand and off-hand weapons. Outward has many off-hand weapons to select from. There are six types of off-hand weapons: Chakrams, Daggers, Pistols, Lexicons, and Shields. Each set of weapons comes with its own unique benefits and requirements, but the following items are the best choices.
10 Savage Shield
- Cost: 200 silver
- Effects: Extreme Bleeding
- Perks: The Savage Shield gives the user a 15% increase in impact resistance. The shield also deals 18 physical damage. While its damage is not as high as other shields in the game, the extreme bleeding effect makes this shield a useful early-level weapon. The shield is compatible with the Guided Arm and Protective Presence enchantments.
- How To Acquire: To acquire the Savage Shield, players will have to unlock at least one legacy chest in the game. If players place a Fang Shield inside the chest, they can choose to list the character who placed the weapon in the chest as their ancestor. Once the new character gains access to the chest, the fang shield will upgrade to a Savage Shield.
9 Cannon Pistol
- Cost: 200 silver
- Effects: Confusion
- Perks: This pistol deals 59 physical damage, as well as impact damage. The Cannon Pistol also has an attack speed of one and durability of 250. This pistol is also compatible with the Levantine Secret enchantment.
- How To Acquire: The cannon pistol can be purchased from any of the following:
- Engineer Orsten (Levant)
- Master-Smith Tokuga (Levant)
- Lawrence Dakers, Hunter (Harmattan)
- Dolar (Giant's Sauna)
- Gold Belly (Giants' Village)
- Silver-Nose the Trader (Hallowed Marsh)
8 Zhorn's Glowstone Dagger
- Cost: 800 silver
- Effects: Glowing (Light Source)
- Perks: In addition to acting as a light source, the Glowstone Dagger deals 9.9 lightning damage and 20.1 physical damage. This dagger is compatible with the Midnight Dance and Tunnel's End enchantments.
- How To Acquire: This dagger can only be acquired in the Hallowed Marsh on the island the furthest northwest. Getting to the island will require walking through the poisonous marsh water, so players will need to have plenty of Elemental Immunity Potions. High decay-resistant armor will also help with the journey. Once players reach the island, climb the hill and go southwest to cross through a hollowed tree bridge. The dagger will be inside the second hollowed tree on the smaller island.
7 Distorted Experiment (Chakram)
- Cost: 2000 silver
- Effects: -10% Status Resistance
- Perks: This chakram deals 7.2 Ethereal, 7.2 fire, 7.2 frost, 7.2 lightning, and 7.2 decay damage. It also acts as a faint light source when equipped. This chakram is also compatible with the Telekinesis enchantment.
- How To Acquire: Players will first need to acquire an Experimental Chakram, and then find the Immaculate's Refuge. There, players can discover a strange green vortex that they can only interact with if the Experimental Chakram is equipped. If players interact with the vortex, they will be transported to a random location in Caldera. Locate the vortex three more times (the location will be random each time) to transform the Experimental Chakram into the Distorted Experiment.
6 Vampiric Dagger
- Cost: 800 silver
- Effects: Leeches health on hit
- Perks: The Vampiric Dagger inflicts blood leech on enemies, draining their health with each hit. Their health is then used to revitalize the player's health and burnt health. This dagger is compatible with the Midnight Dance enchantment.
- How To Acquire: Players will need to acquire a Rondel Dagger and the Thirst enchantment. Rondel Daggers can be found at most merchants and caravans, as well as dropped from enemies and in loot containers around the world. Players can craft the Thirst enchantment scroll using Chrysalis Incense.
- The Enchantment: Make sure the pillars for the enchantment are set correctly (North Close, East Close, South Close, West Close) or the enchantment will not work. The enchantment can only be cast during nighttime (6 PM to 5 AM). Players will then need to use the dagger until it reaches the Quenched status on the enchantment (12,000 damage). Once this condition is met, the weapon can be placed on a Blood Altar and turned into a Vampiric Dagger.
5 Horror Pistol
- Cost: 2000 silver
- Effects: Extreme Poison
- Perks: This pistol deals 60 physical damage and up to 90% decay damage on targets. The Horror Pistol also has an attack speed of one and a durability of 175. This pistol is also compatible with the Levantine Secret enchantment.
- How To Acquire: To craft this pistol, players will need:
- 1 Cannon Pistol
- Horror Chitin
- Occult Remains
- Palladium Scrap
4 Chimera Pistol
- Cost: 2000 silver
- Effects: Elemental Vulnerability
- Perks: While this pistol only deals 90 physical damage to targets, it also inflicts them with elemental vulnerability. A target hit by the Chimera Pistols ammunition will become vulnerable to fire, frost, lightning, decay, and ethereal damage. This pistol is also compatible with the Levantine Secret enchantment.
- How To Acquire: The Chimera Pistol is only found with Tamara the Smuggler (Levant). However, players will first have to complete the Blood Under The Sun quest. If players fail the quest, they will be unable to unlock this weapon.
3 Tsar Chakram
- Cost: 2000
- Effects: None
- Perks: The Tsar Chakram can deal 60 physical damage to enemies and also has an attack speed of one. While this chakram can only deal physical damage, it being a Tsar weapon means it is indestructible. This chakram is also compatible with the Telekinesis enchantment.
- How To Acquire: Players can only acquire this chakram by completing one of the Sorobor Academy quest lines.
2 Tsar Shield
- Cost: 2000 silver
- Effects: None
- Perks: This shield can deal 41 physical damage to enemies. The Tsar shield also grants the user 22% impact resistance. The shield is compatible with the Guided Arm and Protective Presence enchantments. It is also indestructible.
- How To Acquire: Tavel to the bottom of the Dark Ziggurat in the Hallowed Marsh and find the Plague Doctor lich. Players will first need to hold their ground in battle to unlock trading tsar stones for tsar weapons. The Tsar shield will require:
- 1 Tsar Stone
- 1 Hackmanite
- 2 Palladium Scraps
1 Lantern of Souls
- Cost: Cannot Be Sold or Purchased
- Effects: Elemental Resistance
- Perks: The Lantern of Souls grants the user resistance to all elemental damage types in the game. This is broken down into 20 ethereal, 10 fire, 10 frost, 10 lightning, and 10 decay resistance. The lantern is also indestructible, unless it is thrown using the Throw Lantern skill.
- How To Acquire: Players can acquire this unique item by completing the Whispering Bones quest for the Blue Chamber Collective, and only by achieving either of the successful outcomes. To begin this task, speak with Roland Argenson after starting the Looking to the Future quest line on the Cierzo docks. Choose the dialogue options that boost Roland's confidence. Roland will be the most important NPC during the Whispering Bones quest line, so players will need to help him if they want to get the Lantern of Souls.
