Some footage from The Outlast Trials has been unveiled, which gives a sneak preview of what fans can expect in Red Barrels' upcoming multiplayer survival title. Despite being a relatively low-budget video game, the first game in the franchise still managed to impress players with its horrifying visuals, with much of the terror coming from the need to utilize night-vision. The series has gone down as one of the most disturbing in the horror genre, and fans are no doubt looking forward to another follow-up.With its fantastic use of darkness to really up the scares, not to mention the psychotic denizens that dwell within the environments, Outlast did not hold back on frightening the life out of players. While a lot of psychological horror games may employ subtlety or let the gamer's imagination do a lot of the work, Red Barrels came screaming out the door with its maiden release, and subsequent installments have only served to turn the dial up several notches.RELATED: New Outlast Trials Behind-The-Scenes Video Shows Interesting MoCap SequencesRecently, the developer posted a tweet which links to an IGN video. Said video features a preview of The Outlast Trials, giving a brief overview of the tension that awaits fans. While this new entry puts more emphasis on multiplayer survival, there is the opportunity to go it alone. As in the previous two games, it's not possible to battle against enemies, but this time players will be able to have a customized load-out at the start with some items to help out, such as batteries for the night-vision goggles or lockpicks. It's also possible that some previous characters may even make an appearance in Trials, according to Red Barrels.

The closed beta for The Outlast Trials begins October 28 and will go until November 1. This will provide an opportunity for some fans to get a taste of what's in store in this Cold War-era version of the Murkoff Corporation. Given its cooperative lean, it's likely some will compare it to games like Dead by Daylight, or it could even inspire similar multiplayer releases that gear towards, as the video says, "American chainsaw horror."

Going down as one of the best psychological horror games in recent history, the first Outlast really shows just how disturbing gaming can be. The series very much front loads the scares from the word go, leaving subtlety to the likes of Silent Hill. And even though the new game will allow fans to play with others, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be an utterly terrifying experience.

The Outlast Trials is in development.
