Over two seasons and eighteen episodes of Our Flag Means Death, fans have eagerly followed the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Stede Bonnet and his ragtag crew, exploring the high seas with humor, wit, and unexpected camaraderie. While the lovable crew of The Revenge made it out safely in the finale of the second season, it may not be the end of their adventures.
Should the series be greenlit for Season 3, there is plenty of scope for the story to move further along. David Jenkins, creator and showrunner, made a unique blend of romance, comedy and action in the first two seasons. A third would likely be just as entertaining. So what could potentially happen in a new season of Our Flag Means Death?
How Our Flag Means Death Handles Discrimination

Stede and Ed’s Relationship
Season 1 and Season 2 took Stede and Ed through quite a few ups and downs. They got together, then split apart, then got together and split apart again. Season 1 saw Stede come to terms with who he is and what he wants from life while Season 2 followed Ed’s confrontation with his deeds as Blackbeard.
At the end of Season 2, once all the British soldiers are done away with and all the pirates have escaped, the lovebirds don’t go off with them on The Revenge. Instead, they stay on the little patch of land where the crew buried the recently deceased Izzy. They’ve decided to keep their feet on steady ground and become innkeepers instead. They even go inside a musty old hut, discussing how they can do it up for their guests. And that’s the last we see of them.
Just because Stede and Ed end Season 2 on a happy note does not make it a happy ending. David Jenkins has confirmed that he thinks their story is a three-part tale, so fans could expect to see them in Season 3. As to where their relationship can go, there are a few options.
It may seem like happily ever after is on the horizon for the couple but it’s safe to assume that their trials aren’t over. As seen in ‘Fun and Games’ (Season 2, Episode 4), another pair of pirates already tried this. Mary Read and Anne Bonny were pirate queens who retired from their adventures to live with each other on a remote island. But by the time Stede and Ed visit them for dinner, their romance has transformed into a kinky power play where they stab and/or poison one another to keep the spark alive.
Their relationship definitely seems like a bit of foreshadowing and Ed and Stede could follow in their footsteps. On the other hand, they could work hard on loving each other. Jenkins’ own two cents about the couple says a lot about what can be expected, as he told Variety:
These are very flawed people though. They are sweet together, but they are going to have to grow a lot, because the last time Stede did this, he ran out on his family. He liked it so much, he did that twice.
Richard Banes Is Still Out There
We can’t forget that Richard Banes — wannabe Gentleman Pirate to ruthless pirate destroyer — is still out there. The crew might be safely back on The Revenge but Banes is not one to let things go. He would no doubt stir up more trouble in Season 3. With royal soldiers at his command, he wouldn’t pass on the opportunity to get back at the OFMD family. In fact, he could be the thing that intervenes in Ed and Stede’s hopes for a quiet life as innkeepers.
What’s more, Zheng Yi Sao is out for revenge. The Chinese pirate queen is one of the show’s new primary characters, accompanied by a ruthless woman she calls Auntie. Both are shrewd and calculating but ended up falling for Banes’s display of mediocrity. And paid for it. Zheng Yi Sao reveals her plans of revenge when she offers Stede and Ed a partnership in the season finale. Banes took out most of her fleet and for that, the young pirate queen cannot let him go. Ultimately, the man who’s responsible for killing Izzy and leading to one of the show’s most heartbreaking moments would surely not get off that easily.
Supporting Character Arcs
So much of Our Flag Means Death’s charm comes from its ensemble cast. It almost doesn’t feel right calling the rest of the crew the supporting cast. One of the biggest storylines in Season 2 was the relationship between Lucius and Black Pete. They unpacked Lucius’s trauma together which brought them closer and led Lucius to propose. They even have a charming wedding ceremony on the ship in the last few moments of the season finale.
Another key character is Spanish Jackie and the Swede, who is now one of her husbands. The pair seem quite happy together but it’s not marital troubles they need to worry about. The notorious Richard Banes ransacked the Republic of Pirates and in the process, Jackie lost her bar. Her home. At the end of Season 2, as she and the Swede sit arm in arm and the Revenge sails into the sunset, she promises to rebuild the bar better than ever. Considering the role she’s played in the story so far, Season 3 will doubtless see more of Jackie’s plans.
Our Flag Means Death is available to stream on Max
Romance is aplenty among the crew as well. Season 1 saw Jim and Oluwande get together and Season 2 saw Jim find love with Archie while Olu falls for the pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao. Season 3 will likely take these relationships forward and explore their new dynamics. Apart from the romance, the new season will surely continue all the shenanigans and wholesome escapades the crew gets into. Like Roach discovering peanut butter — ‘peanut paste’ in his words — or Jim making necklaces of garlic to ward off Stede’s haunted jacket.
And then there’s Izzy. Well, not really, because he did pass away in the season finale and the crew very much buried him. But this cryptic tweet from David Jenkins signals that we may not have seen the last of him yet.
All in all, there is plenty to look forward to if Our Flag Means Death returns for season 3.
