A new year has begun, give or take a month, and with it comes 4 minutes of brand-new footage from the highly-anticipated continuation of Seth MacFarlane's surprisingly earnest sci-fi homage series, The Orville. Now with 2 seasons under its belt and a sleek new subtitle, The Orville: New Horizons is all set to bring audiences back to a familiar yet different cosmic setting. But those expecting to get eased into the experience might want to strap in and grab their g-suits.
Hulu just released an extended look at what viewers can expect when they jump back into the world of The Orville. Unlike previous trailers for The Orville season 3, this one thrusts audiences right into the action, likely leaving many confused and disoriented. If that isn't the very essence of quality sci-fi, then clearly somebody isn't doing something right. After the previous season ended with a wild time travel plot, as is tradition, it looks like the show has no intentions of taking a breather just yet.
The clip starts with a sweeping shot of a brutal space battle among countless ships. Accompanied by a majestic orchestral soundtrack particularly reminiscent of certain John Williams pieces from Star Wars, the scene transitions from the hectic conflict to the inside of The Orville itself. The hallways are filled with fleeing and panicking crew members as the starship continues to take damage, and the camera meets up with a familiar face for fans of The Orville.
Marcus Finn (BJ Tanner), teenage son of the ship's physician Doctor Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald), races through the halls dodging explosions and just trying to find a way out of this mess. He encounters several close calls, including a damaged elevator plunging into oblivion just after he exits. After narrowly escaping from being pulled out into space through a hole blasted in the hull, he finally finds his younger brother Ty (Kai Wener). As the two helplessly watch the carnage unfold outside the ship, they see non-biological crew member Isaac (Mark Jackson) wordlessly approach. But just as they greet their old friend, his normally featureless face contorts to a grotesque mouth of razor sharp teeth, and the clip transitions into the show's shiny new opening sequence.
That's one heck of a way to bring fans back into the fold. The Orville: New Horizonsalso stars MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, J. Lee, Chad L. Coleman, Jessica Szohr, and newcomer Anne Winters, who will make her debut as Ensign Charly Burke in season 3. Originally marketed as a satire of other sci-fi series like Star Trek, the show quickly proved that it had a lot more heart than viewers expected, tackling surprisingly profound issues and even starting a galaxy-wide invasion.
So unless this is some kind of simulation (come on, this is a Star Trek-inspired series, after all), it looks as though the conflict set up between Isaac's people, the Kaylon, and the rest of the galaxy isn't quite done yet. Last season ended with a bit of a reset, potentially stopping the Kaylon invasion. But that doesn't necessarily mean things are all nice and quiet. Audiences will find out what it all means when The Orville: New Horizons premieres this summer.
