A gamer unearthed their dad's physical copies of the first two Baldur's Gate titles and shared photos of the discoveries online. Much like opened time capsules, the posts triggered a wave of nostalgia as well as a few funny reactions among those who saw them.

Developed by legendary video game studio BioWare, the original Baldur's Gate was released in late 1998, and it was soon followed by a sequel, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, in 2000. Both games, which take place in the tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons' Forgotten Realms campaign setting, earned critical acclaim and instantly became genre-defining cult classics. While old, physical copies of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn can still be spotted in the wild.

Baldur's Gate 3 lets players craft potions using the Alchemy tab. These are the concoctions that will serve players best.

In a recent post on the Baldur's Gate subreddit, a user named Senrakdaemon shared a photo of their dad's Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn boxed set. They uploaded an image of their dad's copy of the original Baldur's Gate a few hours later. While there were seemingly some scuff marks on the sets, overall, they were in great condition. The actual contents, like the games' CDs and included maps, were fine as well, while the 264-page manual for Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn was even in pristine condition.

Several community members reacted to the posts by sharing their experiences with the beloved RPG series. Others, however, commented that seeing the Baldur's Gate games' physical copies reminded them of their age. "I can feel my soul drying up and blowing away in the wind," one user wrote. In response to these comments, Senrakdaemon said they considered everyone in the comments section young because their father was already nearing 50 years old. For some, this remark only added insult to injury.

While the first two Baldur's Gate games were hits, the next true mainline game in the franchise, Baldur's Gate 3, would not come out until 2023. The license for the series had been given to Larian Studios, the Belgian independent developer known for making the Divinity series of RPGs, but the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down development for Baldur's Gate 3. As a result of delays, only an early access version of the game was available to the public for years until the full version was released last August.

The full version of the game received wide critical acclaim like its predecessors, with Baldur's Gate 3 even bagging several wins at The Game Awards 2023, including Game of the Year.
