Highlights

  • Open-world games allow players to explore vast worlds and make choices, including becoming the villain and causing mayhem.
  • Games like Lego DC Super-Villains, The Outer Worlds, and InFamous give players the opportunity to play as villains and use their powers for evil.
  • Titles like Dishonored, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Baldur's Gate 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2 offer players the chance to make morally ambiguous choices and determine the outcome of their character's story.

Open-world games give players the freedom to explore the world as they see fit, especially when in a roleplaying game that gives players multiple choices. While many open-world titles will then continue to have players taking on the role of the hero as they adventure across the lands, some games go in the opposite direction as it allows players to become the villain as they explore.

Since the original Justice League has gone missing, it is now up to the villains of DC to keep the peace, or not, as the player is freely allowed to cause mayhem instead.

Like any good open-world Lego title, players will be able to use the abilities of these various villains and their own villains they have created to traverse the different cities, not to mention the various vehicles they will have available to them too.

The Outer Worlds is an RPG that will see players explore various planets as they uncover a conspiracy that may see the destruction of an entire colony of people. Usually, players would explore a way to stop the capitalist companies' plot to destroy the colony and be the hero who saves the day.

However, like any good roleplaying experience, in The Outer Worlds, players can decide to join the villains of the game to help with this possible demise or even pick the arguably evil options to earn the aid of some peculiar fellows.

Fable is a franchise that many players have adored on the Xbox and have been looking forward to the next title soon in the near future. With the next Fable not yet ready, players have gone to sing the praises of Fable 2, an epic open-world RPG that lets the player either become the hero they were always destined to be, or mix things up a little by becoming the villain of the tale instead.

An interesting feature of Fable 2 for players that decide to be evil is not only the fact that everyone will hate them, but that they will find their character gradually starting to change. Growing horns, their hair turning black, and their teeth starting to rot are only the beginning of becoming the villain of Fable 2.

Bethesda took the Fallout franchise in a new direction with Fallout 3, as players were not only exploring a radioactive wasteland but also being able to interact with the different people they met in all sorts of ways. Players were able to interact with both main story quests and side quests in various ways that may be considered becoming the hero or villains of the story.

There are some truly unusual side quests lurking in the corners of the wasteland.

One prime example of this is making their way to the town of Megaton, which has a mostly dormant bomb sitting in the middle of the town. Players can do the good thing of disarming it for good, or rig the explosive to explode, completely flattening the town and all those that are in it. This isn't the only way to be evil in Fallout 3 either.

Baldur's Gate 3 won Game of the Year in 2023 at the VGAs for not only its phenomenal story but also its wonderful world that is split across the three acts of the game. Every quest and encounter can be finished in multiple ways, with players being the catalyst for their own story.

Besides the main story quests that may see an evil player siding with the goblins to murder a bunch of mostly innocent druids or killing people in cold blood, players can portray themselves as almost anything they want, and they hardly have to be heroes in Baldur's Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate 3 is not a proper open-world game since players cannot explore the whole map at any time. However, each act features a few zones that can be explored quite freely.

Out of all the open-world games to enjoy, one of the greatest that allows players to also be somewhat the villain of their story is Red Dead Redemption 2. It might be the end of outlaw gangs and cowboys, but players can choose to play Arthur Morgan as if he's still one of the most ruthless outlaws in the Wild West.

Players will be given various choices throughout the game that will either see Arthur become a changed man, ready to leave the outlaw life behind or continue in those wicked ways as he steals from every town and the folk in it.
