One Piece is no stranger to powerful characters. From titanic heroes with the ability to destroy the entire world if they choose, to villains who can completely shut off the abilities of their opponents with a single touch, some characters in this series are incredibly dangerous. The main character, Monkey D. Luffy, is one such character as well, since his powers are very diverse and incredibly powerful.
Luffy comes from a large family/clan, many of whom are very formidable fighters. This D. Clan is legendary, and Luffy's father, Monkey D. Dragon, is someone who is likely to be as powerful as some of the strongest characters in the series. However, his appearances in One Piece have been incredibly brief and there has not been any concrete explanation of what his powers could be, so let's take a look at a possible reason why he might be so strong.

Monkey D. Dragon was first introduced in the story very early on in the Loguetown arc, where he had mysterious motives and actions. However, he was later revealed to be the leader of the Revolutionary Army, which branded him as one of the greatest threats to the entire World Government. Starting as a Marine, he became disillusioned with that life after witnessing many cruel acts that seemed to only subjugate more people than help them.

Being a leader of one of the World Government's main opposing forces, his executive control and power within the organization is second to none, as he directly controls all of their movements and plans. Because of this and his various escapades to overthrow the World Government, Dragon has been labeled as the 'World's Worst Criminal'. Moreover, he is the son of Garp, who is one of the most legendary Marines in history, as well as the father of Luffy himself, one of the world's most notorious pirates and strongest characters.
What Could Dragon's Powers Be?
Unfortunately for fans of the character, next to nothing is truly known about his powers due to his sparing appearances in the franchise. What can be surmised, however, is the fact that Dragon can use very powerful forms of Haki, and since many members of the D. Clan can use Conquerer's Haki, Dragon may also be someone who is able to, owing to his overwhelming presence and strength.
As for Devil Fruit abilities, it is currently unknown if he has any. However, his appearance in Loguetown, as well as when he saved Sabo, showed a massive storm accompanying him, leading many to believe that Dragon has an extremely powerful Storm-Storm Devil Fruit. While this could very well be an imposing Paramecia Type Devil Fruit, it's entirely possible that Dragon is the wielder of a Logia Type 'Wind-Wind' fruit that lets him manipulate and create the very winds that are active on the seas.

This ability is incredibly powerful, as the storms that Dragon seems to create are massive in size, capable of causing a great amount of destruction if he so chooses. However, there have only been very few instances in the story where any semblance of Dragon's power was shown, so fans don't have much to theorize about. However, the former theories about a Storm-Storm or Wind-Wind Devil Fruit are the most likely ones.
This is because both of his appearances in the past, in Loguetown and Goa, show him accompanied by a massive storm that sends everyone reeling back except for him. Moreover, Dragon also seems to have some other mysterious abilities. This is because when he came across Smoker, he was seemingly unaffected by the Seastone in the Marine's Jitte, which is something known to neutralize the powers of a Devil Fruit user. Even Trafalgar Law could sense it in his brief altercation with Smoker on Punk Hazard.

Verdict
While it is not clear right now, fans will almost certainly see the nature behind Dragon's powers as One Piece enters its final arc. However, what is known is that his abilities are incredibly formidable, as his potential storm-controlling Devil Fruit can do a great deal of damage when paired with his already powerful Haki abilities. Only time will tell what Dragon's powers truly are, and when that happens, the One Piece world should make way for someone who will undoubtedly become one of the strongest characters in the series.
