Highlights

  • Devil Fruits grant unique abilities, some underrated like Foxy's Noro Noro no Mi that slows down objects and people.
  • Perona's Horo Horo no Mi creates hollows for scouting or combat, causing targets to lose motivation.
  • Magellan's Doku Doku no Mi poisons opponents, and Vander Decken's Mato Mato no Mi ensures thrown objects always reach targets.

Devil Fruits are the cornerstone of the One Piece power system. They are magical fruits that give whoever eats them special abilities that can range from as useless as turning random objects into clothes to being powerful enough to create tremors and earthquakes of such magnitude that they could destroy the entire world. The most powerful of these fruits tend to belong to the most famous and high-status characters in the series.

However, the sheer number and variety of these fruits have made it such that there are a few that are incredibly strong but are often overshadowed by their more famous cousins. These fruits have often had a brief appearance in the One Piece story, but the powers they give their users are incredible, so let's take a look at the most underrated Devil Fruits in the entire series.

Foxy's Noro Noro no Mi

Other Name: Slow-Slow Fruit

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Foxy’s Devil Fruit

First Appearance

One Piece, Episode 210. "Foxy the Silver Fox! A Violent Interference"

Debut Date

November 21, 2004

Story Arc

Long Ring Long Land

Though this fruit had a very brief appearance in a filler arc of the series, its actual power could be extremely dangerous in the right hands. The Noro Noro no Mi allows Foxy to produce particles called 'Noro Noro Photons' that he emits from his fingertips. Once they have been fired, they completely slow down any object or person that they come into contact with, making this fruit a deadly one.

Oh, having such a marvelous personality and beautiful looks is a sin!

In many other series, time manipulation is generally considered to be one of the most overpowered abilities. However, Foxy was kind of a pathetic pirate, since he only really used this ability to cheat in the contests against the Straw Hats and when the time came to use it in combat situations, the awesome power of this fruit was wasted on Foxy.

Perona's Horo Horo no Mi

Other Name: Hollow-Hollow Fruit

One Piece - Perona Summoning A Bunch Of Her Hollows

First Appearance

One Piece, Episode 337, "Venture Into The Devil's Sea! The Mysterious Skeleton Floating Through the Fog!"

Debut Date

January 6, 2008

Story Arc

Thriller Bark

Perona was a character who started out as a villain, though she took on more of a heroic role right before the time skip. Her ability is incredibly underrated, as it allows her to make an almost infinite number of hollows who can behave semi-independently but are always controlled by her. These hollows can work even miles away from her own location, making them perfect for scouting or reconnaissance.

I will tell you one thing... Good things happen!

However, this fruit is very versatile as well, since it can also be used in combat situations. Upon Perona's command, the hollows can explode to do significant damage to her opponents, though the greatest ability of the Horo Horo no Mi comes when they pass through someone. When this happens, the target loses all will and motivation to continue, effectively taking them out of the fight completely. This is only countered if the targets themselves are extremely negative, rendering this ability moot, as seen with her fight against Usopp. The hollows are also intangible, so they cannot be fought!

Magellan's Doku Doku no Mi

Other Name: Venom-Venom Fruit

Magellan creates a Hydra with the poison of his Doku Doku no Mi.

First Appearance

One Piece, Episode 425, "The Prison's Strongest Man! Poison-man Magellan Appears"

Debut Date

November 8, 2009

Story Arc

Impel Down

Magellan's Doku Doku no Mi is an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit that helped to crown him as not only the Warden of Impel Down, but also the prison's strongest man. This fruit allows him to produce near infinite amounts of poison from his body that has the capacity to kill any single person that it is used on, which he can manipulate masterfully by making it take shapes and forms similar to a Logia Type power.

I don't have the time to ask why you're here!

Magellan proved to be an incredible hurdle for the heroes to overcome during Impel Down. He was so strong that, due to his power and mastery over his Devil Fruit, he remains one of the few main villains of an arc that Luffy was never able to defeat, since he only managed to escape the prison after essentially being brought to life by Ivankov's abilities. Despite failing to subdue the prison break, Magellan proved why his fruit is so dangerous.

Vander Decken's Mato Mato ni Mi

Other Name: Mark-Mark Fruit

Vander Decken laughing

First Appearance

One Piece, Episode 532, "A Coward and a Crybaby! The Mermaid Princess in Hard-Shell Tower"

Debut Date

January 22, 2012

Story Arc

Fishman Island

Vander Decken was one of the most pathetic characters ever introduced in One Piece, though his Devil Fruit ability was quite powerful. Similar to Foxy, the Mato Mato no Mi could have been incredibly formidable in the hands of someone better, since anything that the user throws automatically flies toward his intended target, wherever it may be.

Princess Shirahoshi! No matter how long I search this wide ocean floor, I will never find such a grand and beautiful woman as you!

While the ability itself seems simple enough, the scale of what he can do with it is staggering. This is because, in the Fishman Island arc, he touched the Noah to fly straight toward the island, which is incredible since the ship is around the size of an island itself and was only held back due to the strength of the Sea Kings. The possibilities for what Vander Decken can do with this power are amazing.

Baby 5's Buki Buki no Mi

Other Name: Arms-Arms Fruit

Baby 5 One Piece

First Appearance

One Piece, Episode 608, "The Mastermind in the Shadows! Doflamingo Moves"

Debut Date

August 18, 2013

Story Arc

Dressrosa

One of the most unassuming and kind characters in all of One Piece, Baby 5 had a Devil Fruit that had some of the greatest potential in the series. The Buki Buki no Mi allows her to transform herself or any of her body parts into any sort of weapon she desires, as seen when she transforms her entire body from the waist up into a sword or when she continuously transforms her limbs into many different kinds of firearms.

I love helping people more than anything!

Due to this, many fans think that Baby 5's Devil Fruit has incredible potential. Since the kinds of weapons she can form using her body are seemingly endless in terms of variety, many fans believe that she could even transform herself into the legendary weapon Pluton. If this is somehow possible, the Buki Buki no Mi would be the Devil Fruit with the most destructive potential in the franchise, tied only with Whitebeard's Gura Gura no Mi.

Sugar's Hobi Hobi no Mi

Other Name: Hobby-Hobby Fruit

Sugar turning people into toys

First Appearance

One Piece, Episode 730, "Adventure! The Country of Love and Passion, Dressrosa"

Debut Date

January 26, 2014

Story Arc

Dressrosa

One of the only 3 known Devil Fruits that have the power to create a race, the powers granted to Sugar by the Hobi Hobi no Mi were the only reason why Doflamingo's operation in Dressrosa worked so well. This fruit gives Sugar the power to turn anyone she touches into a toy. Once in this state, the toy is then made a slave to carry out the work that Doflamingo's operation requires, unable to do anything about it.

Despite retaining their mind and sentience, the toys cannot move freely or even speak. This is because after they've been transformed, Sugar enters into a contract with them that makes them obedient while, at the same time, erasing them from the minds and memories of everyone who once knew them. This powerful fruit also gives the user eternal youth and its spell can only be broken once the user is incapacitated, as seen when Usopp was able to scare Sugar to the point of fainting twice in the arc.
