Gol D. Roger is one of the most famous One Piece characters. He lived decades prior to the beginning of the story and achieved the unthinkable by conquering the entire Grand Line. Roger was a free spirit with little to no interest in becoming the ruler of the world.

He desired to be the freest man alive, and his crew members helped him achieve his dream. During his voyage, Roger encountered some of the most powerful One Piece characters, yet he never backed down from a challenge. The Pirate King had many incredible abilities in his locker, but these are the ones that catch the eye.

Who Is Gol D. Roger?

Roger's Execution

Gol D. Roger is an influential character who captained the Roger Pirates. Roger and his crew gained a great deal of notoriety, and they became the most wanted group of criminals after their successful voyage. Gol D. Roger was a charismatic individual, and his mere words could convince someone like Kozuki Oden to leave the Whitebeard Pirates.

Roger was fearless, and he looked death right in the eyes. He refused to run away from any battle, even if the odds were stacked against him. After becoming the Pirate King, Roger disbanded the crew and turned himself in to the Marines. Before his execution, Roger told the rest of the world about his treasure, which started the Great Era of Pirates.

Roger's journey to claim the One Piece was nothing short of spectacular. After believing that he had successfully found the final island, Roger learned that there was, in fact, another one. So he had no choice but to set sail again, but this time he acquired the services of Kozuki Oden.

Roger's accomplishment hasn't been matched since his death, which shows how incredible it really is. What makes it even more amazing is the fact that Roger was dealing with an incurable sickness. Even with the disease holding him back, Roger managed to fight for several days against Whitebeard, which ended in a draw. While on his second voyage, Roger also clashed against other strong characters like Garp, Sengoku, and Shiki, proving how superior he was to the rest.

4 Swordsmanship

Roger's Ace in One Piece

Roger wielded a sword named Ace, which is one of the Saijo O Wazamono grade weapons. He used the blade in most of his fights as he didn't have a Devil Fruit. Roger's swordsmanship was on a different level from that of most characters in the story. He was able to overwhelm Kozuki Oden, a legendary samurai from Wano, with a single slash. Oden was flabbergasted after seeing Roger's power, and deep down, he realized victory was impossible.

Roger was able to infuse Ace with both Busoshoku and Haoshoku Haki. The combination of the two resulted in a devastating attack called Divine Departure. Roger's skill also enabled him to cancel out the attacks of Whitebeard's Murakumogiri. The clashing of the two weapons created a massive shockwave that could be felt by every living being on the island.

3 Kenbunshoku Haki

Kenbunshoku Haki is one of the two Haki types that can be learned through training, the other being Busoshoku Haki. A beginner can use Kenbunshoku Haki to dodge attacks from their opponent, but a veteran can accomplish much more. Experienced fighters can unlock Future Sight, which essentially allows them to see the future. There is a limit to how many seconds an individual can see, and it presumably increases with each battle. Needless to say, Future Sight comes in handy in many tricky situations.

Someone like Roger, who fought many great wars, must have unlocked Future Sight. Keeping in mind that Roger is arguably the most powerful pirate of all time, it wouldn't make sense for him to not have Future Sight when characters weaker than him possess it.

2 Busoshoku Haki

Roger's mastery over Busoshoku Haki was no joke either. The Pirate King fought many noteworthy individuals in his life, and it is safe to say that he would not have finished his journey without his immaculate Haki control. Roger's Busoshoku Haki protected him from various attacks, and given the caliber of his opponents, it was an indispensable asset.

He also used it to coat his sword, allowing him to damage the Devil Fruit users. Due to his limited screen time, it is unclear how often Roger used Busoshoku Haki in battle. However, the lack of a Devil Fruit would have made him rely on Haki frequently in battle.

1 Haoshoku Haki

Roger and Whitebeard clash

Haoshoku Haki is one of the three kinds of Haki, and it is the only type that cannot be learned. It is only present in one in a million people, making it a rare ability. Haoshoku Haki is also known as the Color of the Supreme King Haki because it is mainly possessed by those who have kingly ambitions. Roger had a big goal, so it's not surprising that he also had Haoshoku Haki.

He is one of the few characters to have gained complete mastery over Haoshoku Haki. Most characters use it to knock out weak-willed individuals. On the other hand, Roger was able to imbue his attacks with Haoshoku Haki, increasing their potency tenfold. With the help of Haoshoku Haki, Roger was able to compete with the other big names of the Old Era. It is safe to say that without it, Roger would never have managed to achieve his goals.
