Highlights

  • Straw Hat rankings: Jinbei is the best drinker, followed by Zoro and Nami.
  • Franky's ability to get drunk confirms his humanity as a cyborg.
  • Sanji, Robin, and Brook have lower rankings, while Usopp, Luffy, and Chopper aren't big drinkers.

In One Piece SBS 106, mangaka Eiichiro Oda revealed which of the Straw Hats is the best drinker. Given it’s a story about pirates, it doesn’t come as a surprise that many characters enjoy a good cup of Sake, but until now Oda had yet to rank which of the Straw Hats could drink the most. Now he has, and the official ranking on who best holds their liquor comes with some surprising results.

The One Piece SBS segment is a Q&A segment where Oda answers questions mailed in by fans. It has been home to some very important reveals, such as Zoro’s family tree and information on the Roger Pirates, but often the question and answers are gag questions which Oda answers with funny sketches and witty jokes. These answers expand the One Piece world, providing trivial details there isn’t room for in the canon story and allowing Oda and fans to have some fun.

Which Straw Hat Can Drink The Most?

zoro drinking alcohol

When in One Piece SBS 106 a fan asked Oda which Straw Hat is the best drinker, Oda admitted to struggling when ranking them. Nonetheless, he eventually managed and to fans surprise, the number one slot was given not to Zoro, but to Jinbei, whose favorite alcoholic beverage is Tequila. Zoro did of course come in second, with Nami trailing after him, though as both have been seen drinking on multiple occasions, these second and third-place slots were quite predictable. That said, some fans actually expected Franky to take a place on the podium given that with his status as a cyborg, it was unsure whether he could even get drunk at all.

With this revelation, it is confirmed that he is still in fact at least somewhat human post time-skip, something which the community had been debating for some time. In another SBS, Oda had also revealed these characters' favorite alcohols, with Sake being Zoro’s. This is unsurprising as he is frequently seen drinking it in the series, whereas Nami prefers a Screwdriver, likely due to her love of oranges, and Franky drinks rum and coke, an obvious choice given he runs on cola power.

The lower half of the ranking has Sanji in fifth place, followed by Robin and Brook in sixth and seventh. Sanji has almost never been seen drinking, but fans can assume he sometimes tastes the wine he's cooking with, whereas Robin and Brook have been confirmed to be partial to a White Russian and Whiskey respectively, though she generally prefers coffee and he generally favors milk. Unsurprisingly, the last three spots go to Usopp, Luffy and Chopper, the more childlike of the crew who are pretty much never seen drinking.

Nonetheless, when he does, Usopp prefers a Fireball, as he enjoys the spice. On the other hand, Luffy and Chopper have no preference as they don’t enjoy alcohol at all, though Luffy has occasionally been seen having a drink at parties. Of course, he has little interest in drinking as he prefers to focus on eating his fill, with the Sake ritual as an exception to this due to the important symbolism behind the shared cup of Sake. That said, in his answer Oda does state Luffy has potential, so if he were less focused on eating, he would probably rank much higher.

Though who of the Straw Hats is the best drinker may not have been the most relevant information in One Piece SBS 106, Oda’s answer was fun and coherent with the goofy spirit of the One Piece series. Other reveals in this SBS include Admiral Greenbull's backstory, and what kind of justice Fujitora ascribes.
