One Piece 1079 was an incredibly intense chapter for the fans to witness as it gave them a glimpse of the thrilling combat between one of the Yonko, Red-Haired Shanks and a member of the Worst Generation on the rise, Eustass Captain Kid. This fight was teased in the Egghead Island arc a couple of chapters ago and finally, Oda illustrated it in full glory and managed to end it in a single chapter.

During this fight, the entirety of the Kid Pirates were utterly destroyed by a single man, the Yonko, Shanks. To end their pirate career, Shanks used a powerful technique named Divine Departure or Kamusari. This technique is incredibly powerful, as seen in One Piece 1079, however, not everyone knows how it works.

What Is Divine Departure?

Divine Departure is an extremely powerful technique that can be used with a sword. While it is pretty basic when it comes to how it is used, not everyone can make use of this power. To use this skill, the user needs to have access to the Color of the Supreme King, also known as Conqueror's Haki. Once the user has learned the skill, they need to train it to the next level. This is simply due to the fact that the basic version of the Color of the Supreme King is not enough to be useful in high-level battles. To make full use of the power, one must learn to coat themselves in it.

Once the skill has been mastered, the user can also coat other objects in Conqueror's Haki and this form of Conqueror's Haki is known as Conqueror's Coating. By coating their swords in Conqueror's Haki, one can make use of Divine Departure or Kamusari. This technique is incredibly powerful and unleashes a blast of Conqueror's Haki towards the opponent. It is strong enough to take down even the most skilled pirates in a single blow, which just goes to show that it is a technique only used by the elites of the One Piece world. So far, only two characters in the story have been seen to be capable of using Divine Departure and the most recent of those was Shanks, who fans saw use it on Kid in the previous chapter.

The History of Divine Departure

One Piece Gol D Roger using Divine Departure

While Shanks was the latest character to use Divine Departure in One Piece during his fight against Kid right outside the War Land of Elbaf, it was none other than the former Pirate King, Gol D. Roger who was the original user of this technique. Roger was the wielder of one of the 12 Saijo O Wazamono Grade swords, named Ace. It was through this sword that he channeled the technique named Divine Departure. During the Wano or country arc, fans were treated to an incredible flashback of the enigmatic character that was Kozuki Oden. During this flashback, fans got to see Oden eventually leave the land of Wano and become a pirate with the legendary Whitebeard.

One fateful day, while journeying with Whitebeard, Oden came across the monstrous pirate, Gol D. Roger. While Oden charged towards him like a beast, Roger charged back at him and unleashed a powerful blast of Conqueror's Haki from his sword, known as Divine Departure. Despite trying to block it, Oden failed and was sent crashing through several giant trees. This technique caused him to cough up blood and this was proof enough that it was quite powerful, since Oden was a beast in combat himself. Despite that, Oden had enough endurance to withstand this blow and get right back up and jump in combat. Curiously, this technique, despite being used with a sword, did not leave any cuts or scars. This means that this technique is not primarily used for cutting at all. Instead, is used to blow the enemies away with the powerful blast of the Color of the Supreme King.

Shanks' Usage Of Divine Departure

Shanks Looking Intimidating In One Piece

As fans know already, Shanks was the apprentice of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. He was entrusted with the Straw Hat of the former Pirate King and it seems that was not the only thing he inherited from the legendary pirate. Shanks also likely learned Roger's fighting style and is currently making use of that in combat. This was confirmed in chapter 1079 of One Piece where he clashed against one of the Worst Generation's leading pirates, Eustass Captain Kid. When Kid was attempting to launch a powerful railgun attack to blow away the nine pirate ally ships of Shanks, the red-haired Yonko immediately saw the future and to avoid the terrible outcome that was to follow, he pounced at Kid and unleashed the mighty technique known as Divine Departure.

Shanks coated his sword, Gryphon, in Conqueror's Haki and unleashed a powerful blast at Eustass Kid. This blast was so powerful that it completely destroyed Kid's railgun and knocked him out in the process, along with his right-hand man, Killer. Furthermore, Shanks' Haki knocked out several pirates aboard Kid's ship. Once again, this technique did not cut Eustass Kid at all, which just goes to show again that Divine Departure is not supposed to cut the user but instead just blast them away. It is entirely possible that Shanks' version of this technique was stronger than the one Roger used as not only did it knock out Kid but it also knocked out Killer in a single blow and destroyed a big portion of their ship.
