The Marines are one of the three great powers in the world of One Piece. They were created to nullify the threat of the pirates and to bring peace throughout the world. The Marines are led by the Fleet Admiral, and currently, the position is held by Akainu. Below him, there are three Admirals, who are considered to be the Navy's biggest assets. Each of them possesses extremely powerful devil fruits, which makes them a big danger to all the pirates.

With Akainu becoming the Fleet Admiral and Aokiji leaving the Marines, two new spots for the position of Admiral opened up. One of them was taken by Fujitora, who made his debut in the Dressrosa arc. The other position was occupied by Ryokugyu, who didn't make an appearance until the very end of the Wano Country arc. Ryokugyu demonstrated his powers for the first time and there was still a great deal of confusion pertaining to his devil fruit until he finally confirmed the name of his devil fruit in One Piece Chapter 1054. The name of Ryokugyu's devil fruit is Mori Mori no Mi and in the official English translation it is called the Woods Woods fruit. While the name of the devil fruit is perfectly simple, the powers that it grants are incredible.

Power to Change The Surroundings

Admiral Ryokugyu Using His Devil Fruit In One Piece Manga

The Woods Woods Fruit allows its user to create and control plant life. While it may seem like a normal ability, but if the power of this devil fruit is used correctly, it can prove to be devastating. As seen in the recent chapters, the Woods Woods Fruit can effectively change the terrain by manipulating the flora in a specific place. Ryokugyu was able to overwhelm the members of the Beasts Pirates without any problems. If a person is impaled by the roots created by the Woods Woods fruit will have all the liquid drained from their body, which is similar to the power of the Suna Suna no Mi.

The devil fruit can create numerous plant bodies, which can come in handy while facing multiple foes. With its power, the Admiral was able to create huge wooden fists and overwhelm his opponents rather easily. Another big bonus of having the Woods Woods fruit is that it allows its user to fly. The Admiral was able to create a big flower, that he used as a propeller to fly to Wano. Like all the other devil fruits, the Woods Woods fruit has a few weaknesses. Since it is a solid logia, Ryokugyu can't let attacks phase through him, which can be a problem while fighting stronger opponents. The Woods Woods fruit bears a striking resemblance to the Wood Release from the Naruto series, which was popularized by Hashirama Senju. So, are the two powers identical or do they have differences?

Hashirama's Wood Release

Naruto Hashirama using Wood Release vs Madara

The Wood Release is a special ability known as the Kekkei Genkai, and Hashirama Senju was naturally born with it. The Wood Release is powerful enough to change the landscape of a place completely, and Hashirama used it to lay the foundation of the Hidden Leaf, which made him the favorite for the position of the Hokage. In addition, to having high destructive power, the Wood Release has other applications well.

It can be used to drain the chakra of the target, therefore rendering them unable to fight. In his fight against Madara, Hashirama was able to subdue the Nine-Tails, which is the strongest tailed beast without any problems. In the same fight, Hashirama created large wooden structures, which included a giant statue that had numerous arms, and it completely dwarfed Madara's full body Susanoo. He could also create wood clones, which were so realistic that they fooled Madara albeit the Uchiha was so tired that he couldn't even use his Sharingan. Hashirama could also create a forest with flowers, which released pollen that, when inhaled could render a person unconscious. To take things up a notch, Hashirama could amplify the power of his Wood Release by using sage chakra.

Are They Similar?

Admiral Ryokugyu from One Piece

The Woods Woods Fruit and the Wood Release are similar in various ways. Both of them allow their users to create wooden structures that can be used to attack targets. They can also manipulate the local flora and turn them into possible weapons. While the Woods Woods Fruit can drain moisture from the body of the opponent, the Wood Release can drain chakra. Both the powers can drain the source of power from their opponents, with the difference being that the Woods Woods no Mi leaves the target's body shriveled. Another thing that is common between the two powers is that despite their glaring weakness to fire, they cannot be destroyed easily by fire.

Hashirama's Wood Release was able to withstand Madara's Fire Release techniques without any problems, and the plants created by Ryokugyu did not take any damage from the fire of Raizo. However, by applying enough power, the structures created by both abilities can be destroyed. Hashirama's Wood Release could be damaged by Lava Release, while Ryokugyu took damage from Momonosuke's charged attacks. So, it is clear that while the Woods Woods Fruit and the Wood Release do share similar traits, they are not completely alike.
