One Piece's protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, was a rookie pirate at the beginning of his journey, but his years on the seas have made him much stronger. Currently, Luffy is a famous pirate worth 1.5 billion berries and is strong enough to fight the likes of the Yonko on an equal footing.

Although Luffy mainly uses techniques that all of his fans are used to seeing, there are some abilities he rarely uses that very few know about. Just like any other smart fighter, Luffy has developed countless unique fighting techniques.

7 Combined Usage Of Gear Second & Gear Third

Luffy invented the power of Gear Second and Gear Third during the Enies Lobby arc of One Piece when he fought Rob Lucci. His usage of these powers was very rough around the edges at the time. However, in the Thriller Bark arc, his usage of this ability had improved quite drastically.

During his fight against Gecko Moria, Luffy was able to use both Gear Second and Third at the same time and defeat Moria in the process. After the timeskip, this has become much more common as Luffy can often be seen combining the two powers, such as when he fights Kaido and even Ulti of the Beasts Pirates.

6 Snake Shot

Luffy Snake Shot

Gomu Gomu no Snake Shot is a rather strange ability that Luffy utilized during the Fishman Island Arc of One Piece. To perform this technique, Luffy uses devil fruit powers and launches his arm in an almost slithering manner. Luffy then uses his hand to grip tightly on his opponent, sending a shockwave through their body.

This technique was powerful enough to cause great pain to Hody Jones, who was already tremendously boosted by the steroids that he consumed. It is highly likely that this technique has something to do with the Kuja Tribe of Amazon Lily as the name of the technique indicates.

5 Thor Elephant Gun

One of Luffy's Gear Third techniques, the Thor elephant gun, is an incredibly powerful technique that debuted during Luffy's fight against Don Chinjao in the Corrida Coliseum. To perform this technique, Luffy has to first use Gomu Gomu no Rocket to launch himself into the air and then using Gear Third, charge down towards his opponent with an Elephant Gun.

Due to the momentum, this elephant gun becomes much stronger than the regular one and more importantly, it generates an electrical discharge when it strikes the target, hence the word 'Thor' in the naming. This technique was strong enough to defeat Don Chinjao and even restore his nail, which was previously destroyed by Garp.

4 Bane Bane Powers

Luffy Bane Bane no Mi

Over the years, Luffy has already mimicked countless devil fruit abilities and in the Dressrosa arc, this was proven to be true once more. After Luffy fought against Bellamy, he picked up his Bane Bane no Mi powers and used them in the fight against Donquixote Doflamingo. Just like Bellamy, Luffy could use his legs as springs, thanks to the Gomu Gomu no Mi, to increase his momentum and then launch an attack on Doflamingo.

While this attack was nothing special, it was still a tribute to Bellamy and something that showed the fans how far Luffy had come with his devil fruit usage. Since Dressrosa, Luffy has not used this technique, but it remains an interesting addition to his arsenal.

3 Ability Similar To Tekkai

One Piece Luffy Gear Fourth Gomo Gomo no Mi King Kong Gun

Tekkai, also known as Iron Body, is one of the Rokushiki powers of the CP9 that Luffy fought during the Enies Lobby Arc of One Piece. This ability allows one to strengthen their body to a point where it feels like iron and makes it more durable against incoming attacks. Evidently, this technique is quite similar to Armament Haki, as pointed out by Jinbe during his fight against Who's Who of the Tobiroppo.

However, Luffy takes this one step further in his Gear Fourth by combining it with his Gomu Gomu no Mi powers. In doing so, he gains incredible toughness as he is able to maintain his bounciness while also coating himself in Armament Haki. Even a technique as powerful as Doflamingo's Athlete was not able to pierce Luffy's defense.

2 Ability Similar To Geppo

King Kong Gun Gear 4

Just like Tekkai, Geppo is a Rokushiki ability that the CP9 introduced during the Water 7 arc. With this ability, the user can move through the air by kicking it hard enough, which makes it similar to flight. Geppo is another incredible power that Luffy managed to tap into during the two-year timeskip after creating Gear Fourth.

With the elasticity offered by the gear, Luffy is able to move through the air similar to how Geppo users do. When used against Doflamingo, it was so fast that he wasn't able to keep track of Luffy's movements at all.

1 Tankman

Luffy Tankman

Tankman is one of the many forms of Luffy's Gear Fourth, however, this form hasn't debuted in the story so far. In his fight against Cracker, Luffy used an ability called "Tankman: Stuffed Version," which implies that a regular version of this technique also exists.

Luffy was only able to tap into Tankman after eating a lot of Cracker's biscuits and then using Haki, which obviously won't be available to him at all times. Keeping that in mind, Luffy could very well have Tankman up his sleeve as an extra defensive ability that he hasn't used so far.
