The navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece, "Cat Burglar" Nami is one of the most interesting characters in the franchise. She’s part of the "Weakling Trio", along with Chopper and Usopp. But for how much Nami avoids fighting, she’s been in a fair number battles and has earned a respectable bounty. Obviously, she'd have be strong to remain among one of the strongest active Pirate Crews. But as a normal human without a Devil Fruit power or Haki abilities, how can she fight?
Her smarts, skills, and adaptability have helped, but a lot of it has to do with the Clima-Tact. This weapon holds a lot of mysteries, and the extent of its power is still unknown. To shed light on this weapon, let's look at its lesser-known details.
10 Its Four Different Versions
To date, there have been four versions of the Clima-Tact, each one vastly different than the last. One Piece is one of the longest-running manga series of all time, so attacks, weapons, and concepts constantly change.
Clima-Tact's forms have included the one Nami used fighting Miss Doublfinger in Alabasta, then the one she used to fight Kalifa in Enies Lobby. She wielded the next form during the Fish-Man Island arc, and uses its fourth one in the current Wano arc.
9 Only One Was Untouched By Usopp
This catalog of Clima-Tact reversions means that Usopp did a lot of work for Nami. He made the original version entirely on his own. Then, he (as Sogeking) updated it to the second version while the gang was on the way to rescue Robin. The next time Usopp touched this weapon though, wasn't until after Fish-Man island two years later.
After the events on Zou, Usopp used what he learned on Greenstone to improve upon the third iteration even further. However, Nami and the scientists of Weatheria alone worked on the third version alone. This means they somehow found a way to keep the design slim while still incorporating the Sky Island Dials.
8 The First Version Was More Of A Toy Than A Weapon
The first Clima-Tact was built very early on in the Straw Hat’s adventure. In the time from Little Garden to Alabasta, Nami decided she needed something to help her fight if the situation arose, and Usopp helped her out.
However, Usopp misunderstood Nami’s intentions and built her a “weapon” full of party tricks. These included a cute water fountain function, a flower bouquet function, a cuckoo-clock, and more. With all this in mind, it’s an incredible achievement that Nami was able to beat Miss Doublefinger using it, considering her opponent was a trained assassin with a Devil Fruit ability.
7 It Kept The Same Design As Nami's Previous Weapon
When Luffy and Zoro first stumble on Nami, she’s already been tricking and stealing from pirates for quite a while. These plans didn’t usually involve fighting, but when they did, she used a 3-sectioned bo staff to fight them off.
The origin of this weapon is unclear, but she could have easily found it somewhere along the way. But since she's so comfortable using it, Usopp naturally designed the Clima-tact to have the same feel.
6 “Tempo” Means “Weather” In Italian
All the characters of One Piece seem to have a real need for flair. Every Devil Fruit user has the name of their fruit in their attack names, while swordsmen theme their sword names after silly concepts like sushi or ramen. Even regular humans even come up with attack names that follow a gimmick of some sort.
For her part, Nami likes to add the word “Tempo” before all of her Clima-Tact moves. This might seem like an odd word choice, since the English word “Tempo” evokes the idea of a musical beat or flow. But in Italian, this word actually translates to “Weather", which makes much more sense for its context.
5 Without Her Clima-Tact, Nami's Useless In A Fight
To reiterate, Nami is just a regular person who had to fight to survive as a member of Arlong's Crew. This led her to be stronger than most normal people, both physically and mentally. Still, she's not stronger than most pirates in the New World.
With her Clima-Tact and the right circumstances, Nami can fight even the top members of a Yonko’s crew. In fact, thanks to all the water she can create with it, she'd actually be a pretty good counter to an ex-Warlord like Crocodile. But without it, she can't do much at all.
4 It Seems To Have A Lot Of Storage Space
What exactly is the Clima-Tact made of? It has to be light enough for Nami to wield comfortably, yet it contains tools and inventions that can create Sky Island clouds, regulate temperature with precise control, and more. Yet, Zeus, the cloud “Homie” made from a part of Big Mom’s soul, has stated that he fits inside Nami’s Clima-Tact “comfortably”.
The guy is made up of water vapor and Devil Fruit magic, so how much "space" he takes up is a matter of debate. Still, it does hint that the Clima-Tact truly has some A+ machinery hidden within it.
3 For A While, It Used Dials
Speaking of the inventions within the Clima-Tact, fans should already know about a few. The second iteration, the "Perfect" Clima-Tact, managed to incorporate some of the “Dials” that Usopp brought from Skypeia into the design.
It’s never confirmed, but fans can safely assume each one of these orbs holds a Dial, since they would be too big to fit into the weapon otherwise. Then, when Nami rejoined the Straw Hats after the Time Skip, Usopp worked on the Sorcery Clima-Tact further and incorporated more Dials into it, as well as some other new features.
2 It Doesn't Break Down Into Sections Anymore
The Sorcery Clima-Tact is the final and “perfect” version of this weapon. It technically debuted the first time Nami was seen post-Time-Skip, but it only earns this name after Usopp and Franky get their hands on it.
After this, the Clima-Tact no longer needs the “orbs” to keep the Dials in, as Usopp seemingly found a way to compress them. Instead, this new version is all-in-one and can grow and shorten at will. It differs widely in appearance from the other three versions, but it also seems to be the most streamlined for use.
1 The Sorcery Clima-Tact Also Has Greenstone Technology
Usopp, bringing and growing a bunch of the “Pop Greens” from Greenstone, decided to incorporate a few of them into the Sorcery Clima-Tact as well. This is likely how the new version can extend to such an absurd degree, much the same way Usopp’s Kuro Kabuto does.
Taking all past versions into consideration, that means that this weapon uses technology from the Sky Islands, Greenstone, some of Vegapunks technology, some skills Franky learned from Tom in Water 7, and more. It might look like a stick, but this thing is a technological marvel to behold, and its Thunder Lance Tempo attack is effective on almost any enemy.
