Monkey D. Dragon is one of the most important characters in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece. Introduced to the fans during the Loguetown arc, Dragon has only gone and established himself as a crucial character to the overarching plot, especially the endgame of the story. Upon his very introduction, fans knew very little about who he was, and it wasn't until Garp, Luffy's grandfather, paid him a visit in Water 7 that fans were made aware of the fact that he was Luffy's very own father.

Dragon was revealed to be the head of the Revolutionary Army, which is a powerful organization directly opposing the World Government and the Celestial Dragons' grasp over the world. With the aim of overthrowing the Celestial Dragons, Monkey D. Dragon is quite easily one of the most influential characters in the world and, more importantly, an important character who will only continue to grow in terms of influence from here onwards. Very little is known about this mysterious character so far, however, Oda is now starting to delve deeper into his past, which is certainly something that the fans have been waiting for for ages.

Life In Goa Kingdom

Monkey D. Dragon from One Piece

Very little is known about Dragon's life as a child, however, fans do know that he was born in Goa, Kingdom as a son to none other than the Hero of the Marines, Monkey D. Garp. So far, very little is known about Monkey D. Dragon's upbringing as Oda is likely saving that for when fans find out everything that there is to know about his character. Yet, it is a known fact that Dragon reviles the power that the nobles held in the Goa Kingdom.

Something in his early life motivated him to be a voice for those who didn't have one and his progression over the years proves that Dragon was committed to the cause for decades. Oda is yet to explore his relationship with his father, Garp, and as one would likely imagine, Garp would have wanted him to become a powerful marine. Yet, Dragon chose a different path for himself that led him to become the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army that he is today.

The Leader Of The Freedom Fighters

While most fans know Dragon to be the leader of the Revolutionary Army, he didn't always hold this position. Dragon's growth came gradually. Recently, in Dr. Vegapunk's flashback, it was revealed to the fans that Monkey D. Dragon established an organization known as the Freedom Fighters long before the Revolutionary Army. As the name suggests, these freedom fighters fought for the cause of liberation of those who were oppressed, most likely by the World Nobles. However, this organization is known to have been quite poor, as was implied by the fact that Vegapunk refused to join him and joined the Navy instead because it was the only organization that could make use of his genius mind.

The Creation Of The Revolutionary Army

Monkey D. Dragon

22 years ago, when the World Government launched a Buster Call on Ohara, Dragon reached a tipping point and swore to never let a tragedy like this happen again. He decided to create an organization powerful enough to fight the World Government head-on and even overthrow the Celestial Dragons. The very same year, Dragon created the Revolutionary Army by joining forces with the former King of Sorbet Kingdom, Bartholomew Kuma, and the King of Momoiro Island, Emporio Ivankov. These three became the founding members of the Revolutionary Army and remain its core face to this day.

Gradually, the Revolutionary Army started gaining fame and power. Dragon's ideology slowly influenced smaller countries and brought them over to his side. At the same time, some other countries picked up arms and fought their own way to liberation, thanks to Monkey D. Dragon. As years passed, Dragon's Revolutionary Army became an ever-growing threat and at the Reverie, his growing influence became a talking point. Dragon was then recognized as "The World's Worst Criminal" as, unlike even the Yonko, he directly opposed the World Government and planned to overthrow the Celestial Dragons as nobody else had attempted in the past, aside from maybe Rocks.

The Future Of The Revolutionary Army

Over the years, Dragon's Revolutionary Army has continued to grow stronger and has found powerful members in the likes of the Revolutionary Army Commanders. Currently, its forces are made up of five Commanders, which include Bello Betty of the East Blue Army, Karasu of the North Blue Army, Morley of the West Blue Army, and Lindbergh of the South Blue Army. The founding member, Emporio Ivankov, is at the helm of the Grand Line Army, while Bartholomew Kuma's role remains undetermined as of now. Next to Dragon is none other than Luffy's older brother, Sabo, also known as the Flame Emperor. Sabo has reached a fame that surpasses even that of Dragon, following his incarceration as the murderer of Cobra.

After years of hard work, Dragon's Revolutionary Army is ready to make its move and launch a large-scale attack on the World Nobles in an attempt to overthrow them. At this year's Reverie, Sabo, along with some Commanders of the Revolutionary Army, declared war on the World Nobles. With One Piece now in its final saga, Monkey D. Dragon and his Revolutionary Army are only going to become more prominent and will most likely succeed in that task of overthrowing the descendants of the 20 Kings and uncovering secrets about the Ancient Kingdom and its people.
