Highlights

  • The positive reception of the live action adaptation of One Piece has raised the franchise's profile and opened up the possibility for a new video game.
  • The Netflix series has exposed new audiences to the series, making it a prime time to announce a new game and draw in new fans.
  • Revisiting the earlier story arcs in a game based on the beginnings of the Straw Hat crew could be a smart move to ease new fans into the series and capitalize on the current momentum.

The recent live action adaptation of One Piece could be a fantastic omen for the franchise's near future in the gaming sphere. One Piece has been one of the biggest anime properties around for a long time, even though it hasn't seen the same amount of games that Dragon Ball has received. Its live action adaptation is only the latest development in the franchise, and thus far it looks to be a positive addition. Of course, a series as big as One Piece has a lot of gaming potential, and the new Netflix series adds more fuel to the fire.

The fact that One Piece inspired Yakuza: Like a Dragon should give a good idea of how influential the series is. One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who dreams of becoming the king of the Pirates. Alongside a crew full of friends, he sails the seas in search of adventure and the chance to achieve his dream. Despite being a pirate, Luffy's adventures typically involve less looting and more superpowered action, as his good heart guides him to frequently fight evil and defend the innocent. For a story that started in 1997, One Piece is still going strong, and a new game can keep the momentum going.

One Piece's Live Action Incarnation Could Inspire its Next Video Game

When taking into account how many One Piece video games have been made, it shouldn't be a major surprise that the venerable story received a live action adaptation as well. The live action show was viewed with a lot of suspicion at first, largely due to the spotty reputation that many live action adaptations have received over the years. However, upon release, the show's reception was quite positive, with the first season proving to be a success. The Netflix series ended up raising One Piece's already-high profile, even though it only covers the story's first few chapters, and the future of the franchise looks even brighter than before.

The live action show raises a strong argument for a possible new One Piece game, and not without merit. While the Netflix version of One Piece was likely mostly anticipated by existing fans, it has also exposed plenty of newcomers to the series. That combined with the series' high streaming numbers means that much more attention than usual is being given to the series. In order to capitalize off of the moment, announcing a new game while the series is riding high off of the new series would be a wise move. It could be the best time to draw new fans into trying a One Piece video game.

While the live action One Piece has only covered the very earliest arcs so far, One Piece Odyssey's revisiting of story arcs shows that past chapters aren't off-limits for games. In fact, with the Netflix show bringing One Piece's first chapters back to relevance, the idea of a game based on the beginnings of the Straw Hat crew may be more plausible than it has been in years. Admittedly, with One Piece being such a long-running series with a massive cast, its scope can be intimidating. Going back to the old days could be an extra help in easing newer fans into the series.

One Piece is a media sensation, and the Netflix series has given it a big push outside its usual fanbase. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4's surprise new DLC shows that the series still gets love in the gaming industry as well, so another new title is definitely in the realm of possibility. There's a chance to not only capture the attention of fans attracted by the new show, but pay proper respect to the series' genesis in the process. One Piece's live action show could be the boost that pushes its next game into being something special.
