  • Speculation remains over Jewelry Bonney's parentage and whether she is Bartholomew Kuma's biological daughter.
  • Ginny, Bonney's mother, was kidnapped by a Celestial Dragon and it is unlikely that Kuma is her biological father due to their separation.
  • Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, who experimented on Ginny and Bonney, is the most likely candidate for Bonney's biological father, adding another cruel twist to Kuma's tragic past.

Bartholomew Kuma's tragic past has been the primary focus of the Egghead Arc in One Piece for quite some time, and its many revelations have painted the former Warlord's actions throughout the first half of the series in a new light. In addition to explaining his confusing behavior prior to the time skip, as well as his unfathomable decision to become a cyborg weapon for the World Government, the flashback also shed light on his relationship with Jewelry Bonney, and her mother Ginny.

While lingering questions about Kuma's earlier personality, motives, and beliefs were answered in the flashback, there is still a great deal of speculation over one detail that it did not explicitly confirm. This, of course, pertains to Bonney's parentage, since it was never stated that she was Kuma's biological daughter, even though he raised her as his own. Considering the lack of information regarding Ginny's time in Mary Geoise, One Piece's creator, Eiichiro Oda, may have saved one last earth-shattering revelation, pertaining to Bonney potentially being the daughter of none other than Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, Kuma's lifelong tormentor.

The Circumstances Of Her Birth Lean Towards it Being the Case

Ginny death, jewelry bonney birth, one piece 1098

Jewelry Bonney's first chronological appearance in One Piece came shortly after the death of her mother Ginny, inside the church where Kuma lived in the Sorbet Kingdom. Having been taken hostage by a Celestial Dragon two years earlier, Ginny was forced into marriage and gave birth to Bonney. Although Bonney's exact age at the time she left Mary Geoise has not been determined, it is fairly unlikely that she is Kuma's biological daughter, due to the lengthy time period for which he was separated from Ginny.

Naturally, the next candidate for the role of Bonney's biological father would be the same Celestial Dragon who kidnapped Ginny, and took her to Mary Geoise. The concept of marriage for the World Nobles is quite complicated, as many of them practice polygamy and have the right to take anyone as their spouse. However, the actual nature of this relationship is more akin to slavery rather than marriage, as the captive victims have virtually no rights.

There is another important point to note here, as Ginny and Bonney were both cast aside by the former's captor soon after she fell ill with Sapphire Scale. Although the act of releasing a captive spouse is not too surprising given the track record of the World Nobles, there is not much known information about how the child of a World Noble and a commoner would be treated in such a situation. On one hand, it is quite likely that only the children of two World Nobles would be considered a legitimate heir to their bloodline, but this could also not be the case. Moreover, Bonney's childhood was also a unique situation, due to the intervention of a certain person.

Saturn's Comments About Ginny And Bonney Provide Some Important Clues

In Chapter 1103 of One Piece, Saint Jaygarcia Saturn of the Five Elders claimed responsibility for his part in killing Ginny, as he had subjected her to a series of experiments using some unknown drug. The side effect of his experiments was the appearance of the Sapphire Scale disease, which ultimately took her life. Moreover, Bonney inherited her mother's condition, which became the focus of Kuma's struggle for many years, as he desperately sought to find a cure for her illness.

Saturn also declared that he was the one who gave Bonney her Devil Fruit abilities, through another series of experiments which gave her the powers she now has without making her consume an actual Devil Fruit. The process involved administering an extract when Bonney was just a child, and although the experiment was deemed a success, Saturn lamented that the Devil Fruit in question was nothing remarkable, in his opinion.

Even though the thought of Saturn experimenting on Ginny and Bonney is not all that surprising, it would be odd to think that he would have been able to do so if Ginny was either married or betrothed to another Celestial Dragon. This indicates that Saturn himself may have been the one who abducted and married her. Furthermore, Saturn also referred to Ginny as the "8th wife" or "8th Lady of the Holy Land," depending on the translation, which could either imply a direct connection to him, or perhaps even Imu.

This Would Be Another Brutal Twist of Fate For Kuma

If Saturn is actually Bonney's biological father, that would be an extremely cruel turn of events, as he has persistently vied to make Kuma's life a living hell, ever since they first met in God Valley. From inflicting serious injuries upon Kuma when he was only a child in God Valley, to abducting his beloved, and finally, forcing him to give up his body in exchange for Bonney's life, Saturn has been one of the main causes of Kuma's struggles. Therefore, it would be even more devastating for Kuma if he were actually Bonney's biological father.

That being said, Saturn's words in Chapter 1103 of One Piece could also betray a connection to Imu — if they were revealed to be male — but the chances of this are slim, and any speculation would be fairly unfounded until more is revealed about who they really are. Currently, it appears as if Saturn is the most likely candidate to be Bonney's biological father, which would be awful for both her and Kuma. Even though Bonney clearly feels nothing but hatred towards him, her emotional state may be driven into even more confusion if this were confirmed to be the truth.
