Highlights

  • Jewelry Bonney's recent power-up has placed her among the very best in One Piece, showcasing immense potential with the Toshi Toshi no Mi.
  • Bonney's Nika transformation, similar to Luffy's Gear 5, grants her rubbery properties and the ability to manifest Gomu Gomu no Mi powers.
  • While Bonney's Gear 5 is as strong as Luffy's, her lack of Haki limits her ability to deal substantial damage, but her potential for growth remains infinite.

Jewelry Bonney is one of the most overpowered characters in One Piece right now, and thanks to the recent power-up that she has received, fans know that she's up there with the very best in the entire series, at least in terms of potential. Bonney has the power of the Toshi Toshi no Mi, which is an incredible Devil Fruit. With its powers, Bonney has effectively taken many futures over the course of the Egghead Island Arc, and more recently, she even managed to tap into the power of Gear 5, which is a transformation exclusively used by Luffy.

One Piece 1118: Joy Girl Arrives On The Battlefield

One Piece chapter 1118 saw Joy Boy and Joy Girl take the battlefield by storm.

Now, Bonney holds tremendous power in her hands, and fans are eager to see what she can do using this ability. That said, one truly has to compare Bonney's version of this technique with Luffy's to see what the differences really are.

Bonney's Nika Transformation

Bonney Could Manifest Rubbery Powers 2 Years Before The Current Timeline

Bonney uses her power in One Piece

Jewelry Bonney tapped into the power of Nika or Gear 5 for the very first time in the Egghead Island arc. However, a prelude to that was given to the fans in the Kuma flashback. There, fans saw Bonney tap into the power of Distorted Future multiple times, especially when she set out on her journey. Using the power of this Devil Fruit, she was able to transform and give herself a Nika-like future. It must be noted that this future was very different from the future that she accessed rather recently in Egghead. This future only gave Bonney rubbery properties, and that was simply down to the fact that Bonney had never seen Nika and all the information that she had was that Nika possessed a body made of rubber.

Its powers might allow you to transform into any future, but the more you know of reality, the narrower your future possibilities become.

Essentially, this gave Bonney the basic power of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, and she could manifest a giant fist with it, crushing Alpha and securing her escape. Clearly, Bonney was incredibly dangerous at that time, however, the true power of her Nika transformation only came forth when the Egghead Island Arc properly kickstarted. In this Arc, Bonney met Luffy, found out about his freest form, and then, later down the line, got to witness this form with her own eyes. In fact, Bonney witnessed Luffy's Nika transformation multiple times, and, then, she was pushed by Luffy to access the form herself, which suggested Luffy knew that Bonney had it in her to transform into Nika just like him. In One Piece chapter 1118, she officially did just that. Now, it can be said that Bonney is among the most powerful individuals in One Piece, and her Nika transformation, which is exactly like Luffy's, is going to shake the entire world.

Right now, Bonney has clearly manifested a giant body, with all her clothes having turned white, other than her sash, and her hair going white as well. She has a smoke ring around her neck, and there is no physical difference between her and Luffy's Nika transformation. Bonney is a monstrously powerful individual right now, and she will most definitely fight at the best of her abilities against the Elders in the upcoming chapter.

The Strength Of Jewelry Bonney's Gear 5

Bonney's Gear 5 Is Very Different From That Of Luffy

When speaking of the strength of Bonney's Gear 5, one needs to keep in mind that there is no difference between this power being accessed by Bonney or Luffy. Bonney's Gear 5 is just as strong as that of Luffy, and both abilities work the same way. Even though Bonney might not have access to a Mythical Zoan ability, Bonney does not need it. Her Devil Fruit allows her to access the power of any future that she can imagine, and in this particular imagined future, Bonney is Nika. This means that she has every power that Luffy has, and on top of that, she can fight with immense freedom. This makes Bonney a ferocious individual who can do anything that one would imagine Luffy doing using the power of Gear 5.

Be it manifesting things out of nothing, running in mid-air, turning into a gag-like cartoon character, or forcing gag effects on her enemies, Bonney can do it all. She can also break the laws of physics itself and that certainly makes her a force to be reckoned with.

I don't know how your powers work, but you've got this, Bonney!

However, while Bonney certainly has all these incredible powers thanks to Gear 5, she certainly isn't as strong as Luffy. This is simply down to the fact that Bonney and Luffy have a massive difference in terms of strength. The base strength of Luffy is much higher than that of Bonney. This means that an equal buff of Gear 5 for both will result in different levels of strength, because Luffy is much stronger, to begin with. Bonney is still a 12-year-old child, and while she will be incredibly powerful, likely one of the strongest on Egghead, she is not going to be on the same level as Luffy right now.

One Piece: The Limitations Of Bonney's Nika Form, Explained

Bonney has unlocked her very own Nika transformation. While this is powerful, she has her own limitations in One Piece.

The thing that fans need to keep in mind is that Bonney does not have access to Haki, as far as fans know. This essentially means that while Bonney is very strong, she cannot strengthen Gear 5 even further. Luffy certainly needed Haki with his Gear 5 in order to deal any sort of substantial damage to powerful individuals such as Kaido or even the Elders. However, Bonney cannot do that because she lacks Haki. That certainly doesn't mean that Bonney cannot fight powerful fighters. In fact, Bonney should be able to fight against the Elders and even a Yonko such as Kaido; Such is the strength of Gear 5. However, only with Haki was Luffy able to defeat a Yonko and without this power, Bonney cannot make the best use of Gear 5.

Bonney's Gear 5 Potential

Sky Is The Limit For Jewelry Bonney's Gear 5

Bonney's potential with Gear 5 is infinite. All she has to do is make herself stronger, which she will likely gain the opportunity to do easily in the future. Bonney will strengthen tremendously. Fans should not put it past her to learn powerful Haki, and when she does that, she will be incredibly strong. Furthermore, Bonney will also gain control over her Devil Fruit powers with time. Once that happens, fans know for a fact that she is going to be able to utilize all her transformations much better, including Gear 5. Right now, Bonney has not showcased what she is truly capable of in battle. Fans should keep in mind that she is going to go head-to-head against an Elder in the next chapter. A betting man would put their money on Bonney being able to push back the Elders and even hurt them.

Of course, the Elders can regenerate, but Bonney being able to overwhelm them in combat is going to be symbolic and that will also solidify her strength among the top tiers of the One Piece world, at least while she is using Gear 5. Of course, this fruit is also going to have its limitations as Bonney is likely not going to be able to use it for long. She doesn't have the physical strength required to keep this up for long, and at the same time, Gear 5 is incredibly taxing.

Furthermore, Distorted Future has a time limit of its own, which makes Bonney limited in terms of what she can do with this power, as it should be, at least while she is very young. However, Bonney can improve in all these aspects and become an Emperor-level pirate.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1119, is set to be June 30, 2024.
