For a series that has been running for over two decades, it is inevitable that certain plot structures, story beats, and other elements will be recombined in new contexts as the grand narrative progresses. With One Piece, Eiichiro Oda has showcased his mastery of this strategy, from his ability to reintroduce themes, concepts, or characters from earlier story arcs into new ones, to his immaculate skill in the art of foreshadowing. In fact, parallels between older and newer story arcs are prevalent throughout One Piece on close observation.

One of the more recent instances of this concept's implementation can be seen in the Egghead Island Arc. As the first segment of the Final Saga, following the conclusion of the Yonko Saga in the Wano Country Arc, there are quite a few similarities it shares with the Punk Hazard Arc from an earlier point in the Straw Hats' journey through the New World. These parallels emerge in its structure, narrative threads, and the manner in which major characters have been introduced, which will eventually sow the seeds for the climax of the Straw Hat Pirates' epic journey.

A Covert Research Base

Both arcs take place on secret research bases, with Punk Hazard having formerly served as a base for the World Government's research, which at the time, was conducted by both Vegapunk and Caesar Clown. Moreover, a recent battle between Akainu and Aokiji for the post of Fleet Admiral — a fight that Akainu won — had ravaged the island. One half of the landmass featured a sea of fire and magma, and the other blanketed in glaciers as a consequence of their respective Devil Fruit abilities.

Similarly, Egghead Island is the current headquarters of the Marine's Special Science Group (SSG), also headed by Vegapunk, which acts as a covert division of the Navy tasked with developing advanced weaponry and technology for the World Government. While it was originally a winter island, Vegpapunk's technology had created a tropical environment in the area surrounding his laboratory.

In effect, the Straw Hats' arrival on the island triggered a sequence of events involving Vegapunk, Cipher Pol 0 agents, and the Marines, leading to the intervention of a Marine Admiral in Kizaru and even one of the Five Elders. It is fairly certain that Vegapunk and his satellites will have a sizable role to play in the Straw Hats' journey going forward, but only time will tell for certain. Additionally, Jewelry Bonney, the daughter of the former Warlord Bartholomew Kuma and member of the Worst Generation, also allied with the Straw Hats in a bid to find her father and escape the Marines.

Punk Hazard on the other hand, was in a state of chaos when the Straw Hats arrived. Much like Admiral Kizaru on Egghead Island, the Straw Hat Pirates encountered Vice Admiral Smoker and Captain Tashigi, who had been pursuing the crew from the G-5 Marine Base near the Red Line, along with Vice Admiral Vergo. Simultaneously, they also ran into the Heart Pirates led by Trafalgar Law, a Warlord of the Sea and a member of the Worst Generation, who would go on to play a major part in the Straw Hat Pirates' journey until they reached Wano. Additionally, they also met Kin'emon and Momonosuke, who were also responsible for leading the crew to Wano in order to take down Kaido.

Forging An Unlikely Alliance

At the time of the Straw Hats' arrival, the island of Punk Hazard had been overtaken by Caesar Clown, a former member of MADS. His experiments with poison gas had been the cause of the earlier Punk Hazard Incident which forced the closure of the old Marine research institute on the island. Following his return to Punk Hazard after a term of imprisonment, he had resumed his research in secret, using less than savory means to obtain results.

Caesar's work was funded by the Warlord Donquixote Doflamingo, working under the Emperor Kaido, as both pirates sought the Artificial Devil Fruits he had created which were known as SMILEs. On encountering Law on Punk Hazard, the Straw Hats formed an alliance with the Heart Pirates, as well as Kin'emon and Momonosuke.They agreed to capture Caesar Clown and use him as a bargaining chip against Doflamingo. This sequence of events set up the Dressrosa Arc, followed by the Wano Country Arc, where the Straw Hats finally defeated Kaido and returned both Kin'emon and Momonosuke to their homeland which was now liberated.

The Egghead Island Arc saw the introduction of Dr. Vegapunk, also a former member of MADS and the world's foremost scientist and a figure whose reveal had been hundreds of chapters in the making. On realizing that he was condemned to death due to his research into the Void Century, Vegapunk sought the aid of the Straw Hats and begged to be taken aboard their ship, just as CP0 agents Rob Lucci and Kaku, entered the fray to eliminate the scientist.

Lucci and Kaku had previously been the main antagonists for the Enies Lobby Arc, when they were part of CP9. The CP0 agents were forced to ally with Luffy and his crew temporarily to subdue the Seraphim on Egghead, much like how Smoker and Tashigi had to work with Luffy and his crew against Vergo and Smoker. Previously, Smoker and Tashigi had been involved in both the Loguetown and Alabasta Arcs at earlier junctures in the Straw Hat Pirates' journey through the Grand Line. Lastly, the appearance of Aokiji, now known as Kuzan, in both arcs served to tease and later confirm his membership in the Blackbeard Pirates, following his defection from the Marines as Sakazuki took over as Fleet Admiral.

Onward To The Next Island

As Vegapunk prepares to sail with the Straw Hats to Elbaf, it is likely that his involvement will now either set the Marines directly on Luffy's tail, if the crew does manage to escape the clutches of Kizaru and the Marines. As the start of a brand-new saga, Egghead has been full of revelations, world building, and action from all over the world, with not a single panel wasted throughout its run.

As it stands, the Egghead Incident will likely set up the next phase in the Straw Hat Pirates' journey just like Punk Hazard did, with Bonney replacing Trafalgar Law while Vegapunk and his satellutes are fulfilling the roles of Kin'emon and Momonosuke. Even though the trajectory of the story and the roles played by these characters will certainly not be identical, Eiichiro Oda's penchant for recontextualizing earlier ideas is driving the plot of the Egghead Arc in One Piece forward, as all roads now point to Elbaf.
