The Build-Up To God Usopp

While initially seeming like a beacon of prosperity and peace, the isolated land of Dressrosa actually harbored a dark secret. When the Straw Hats came to the land, they were astounded to see how many of the inhabitants of this land were toys and how well they got along with humans, leading them to falsely assume that everything on this island was fine due to how happy every citizen seemed.

However, later on, the secret of these toys was revealed; they were once humans who had mysteriously gone missing! After this, they were transformed into obedient automatons who, despite having full mental faculties, could not move on their own, effectively acting as a tireless workforce for the Donquixote Pirates and their shady underground business dealings.

It fell upon the Straw Hats to change this fate, which they planned to do with the help of the native dwarves of Dressrosa called the Tontatta Tribe. The ones who directly aided their efforts were Robin and Usopp, the latter of whom convinced the Tontatta that he was the direct descendant of the legendary Mont Blanc Noland, who they revered as a legendary hero. Due to this association, the Tontatta believed Usopp to be the great savior who would release them from the evil clutches of Doflamingo, even going on to call him 'Usoland'.

Furthermore, the truth behind the toys became well-known to all heroes. One of the officers of the Donquixote Pirates, named Sugar, ate the Hobi Hobi no Mi, an extremely powerful Devil Fruit that lets her turn anyone she touches into a toy. Once they were turned, she made a contract with them to do whatever she commanded, which is why all the toys carried out all her wishes despite not even wanting to. This powerful ability became known as the 'Hobi Hobi Curse' and, on top of this, would also erase the memory of the human from everyone's minds.

Story Arc

Dressorsa Arc

The plan to break the curse was simple enough; to exploit Sugar's love of grapes by feeding her one with hot sauce in order to make her pass out, breaking the curse in the process. As Usopp and Robin join the Tontatta Tribe in achieving this goal, however, everything seems to go against their plan as they are all defeated and Robin is turned into a toy. Using the commotion as a distraction, Usopp begins to run away from the scene.

However, as the cries of the Tontatta chanting his name as their legendary hero begin to ring loudly in his ears, Usopp goes against his instincts and returns to the battle, ready to take on the officers of the Donquixote Pirates and truly become the legendary hero of the Tontatta Tribe. However, in typical Usopp fashion, he proceeds to get beaten up really badly and bound by rope, where he is fed the very same grape that they planned to feed to Sugar.

My name is Usopp! Remember, Tontatta! If I die, build me a statue next to Noland's! From now on, I'm going to become your "Legendary Hero"!

Just as all hope seems lost, Usopp's insane reaction to the spiciness of the grape scares Sugar so much that she ends up passing out regardless! This ends up turning every single person who had been turned into a toy in the past 10 years back into a human, directly leading to the destruction of the factory, the workforce, and the port.

As Usopp lies there, bloody and beaten, he is hailed as the hero of not only the Tontatta Tribe but also every single person who had ever been turned into a toy! As the giant warrior Hajrudin holds him up to show everyone the face of the hero who saved them, the ceiling on top of them is destroyed due to Sabo's previous battle, shining a light on the sniper of the Straw Hats, making him seem like a warrior sent from the heavens! This angelic sight makes those he saved cry with joy, as they now proclaim him to be God Usopp!

Why it's such a hilarious moment:

Even at the point of Dressrosa, the Straw Hats were notorious for their strength, with Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji being incredibly powerful and well-known warriors. Usopp, however, was known to every fan of the series to be the only one in the crew to ever react realistically to a problem instead of tackling it head-on, greatly endearing him to everyone. So, to think that it was he who singlehandedly destroyed the empire of one of the most dangerous and intelligent pirates in the world of One Piece is one of the funniest things in the series.

This is made even better because Usopp is known for being a coward who, despite knowing what was going to happen to him, decided to stand up to Trebol and Sugar regardless. To add to the hilarity of destroying everything Doflamingo had worked for all by himself by accident, he received a 500 million Berry bounty on his head during Doflamingo's game, which was even higher than those of Luffy and Law!
