The most wanted man in the One Piece series is none other than Luffy's father, Monkey D. Dragon. As the leader of the Revolutionary Army, a major power in the series, many wonder about the true origin of Dragon. While Dragon is definitely a major character in the One Piece series, very little is known about him. His powers and origins remain a mystery. Moreover, the tattoos he has on his face and body increase the mystery around him.

Other individuals seen with tattoos in the One Piece series are of the Shandia tribe. This has led many to wonder if there is a connection between Dragon and the Shandia tribe. Moreover, as Luffy's Gear fifth awakening and reveal of the true nature of his devil fruit can be traced back to Skypiea, the plot thickens.

Summary Of The Fan Theory

Shandia One Piece

The fan theory connecting Luffy's lineage to Skypiea talks about Monkey D. Dragon being a descendant of Shandia. The theory starts with questioning why Dragon has such a strong hatred for the World Government. If it is because of the nasty things the Celestial Dragons do, then Dragon should also bear such animosity towards pirates like Kaido and Doflamingo, who enslaved whole countries. However, Dragon does not seem to have his sights set on pirates like that. This means that Dragon's animosity has deeper roots than the nasty acts the Celestial Dragons do. The theory then implies that Dragon's animosity may be connected to his origins, which are linked to the Shandia tribe.

Of the various members portrayed in the One Piece series, Kalgara and Wiper are the only characters portrayed to have tattoos like Dragon. While some may say that Dragon's tattoos are completely different from Kalgara and Wiper's, it is important to note that Kalgara's and Wiper's tattoos are different from each other despite them being from the same clan. Judging by the type of person Dragon is, the tattoos most likely hold a deeper meaning. Moreover, it is important to note that Dragon did not always have those tattoos and instead got them after he began his revolutionary journey. This goes to show that Dragon most likely found out about his ancestry, the void century, and the history of the D clan after he became a revolutionary. Moreover, he most likely found out about what the World Government presumably did to his clan and marked his face to show his resolve to get revenge.

Could The Fan Theory Be Legitimate?

Celebrating After Enel's Defeat

While the fan theory is primarily based on speculation from connecting various dots, it does have a degree of legitimacy to it. Although nothing is confirmed, Dragon could indeed have Shandian origins. If he truly is, this would go on to better connect Luffy's devil fruit awakening with Shandia. During the Skypiea arc of the series, the sun god was briefly talked about alongside other gods. Moreover, after it was revealed that Zoan devil fruits have a will of their own, it would make sense if the mythical Zoan Human-Human fruit, Model Nika, would choose someone from the Shandia tribe, as they worship the sun god, Nika, presuming the Shandia tribe descended from Nika or had deep connections with the ancient god.

The fan theory also uses some manga covers and color spreads to support the legitimacy of the theory. In various chapters and color spreads of the manga, such as the color spreads for chapters 175, 352, and 431, Luffy has been seen dressing like the Shandians or using their weapons. Moreover, the cover of volume 27 shows Luffy with Shandia wings. While light, this could be a sort of hint or foreshadowing, as Oda is commonly known to employ such tricks. Moreover, it is important to note that while Luffy has been depicted as a knight, samurai, or other things in various color spreads, his crew has also been depicted as such. However, even when Luffy is depicted as a Shandian or with Shandian characteristics, his crew is depicted normally.

What Effect Would Dragon's Shandia-Tribe Origin Have On The One Piece Series?

One Piece Monkey D. Dragon Smiling

If Dragon were revealed to be from the Shandia tribe, the impact it would have on the series would depend on how Eichiro Oda integrated it into the story. Still, it would have various implications and add various layers of complexity to Dragon's character. Moreover, this would mean there is more to Dragon and Skypiea, the island in the sky.

When Luffy visited Skypiea, a ton of mystery already surrounded the island, as Gol D. Roger had Oden engrave some words on the Golden Bell. If Dragon, and by extension, Luffy, should originate from there, it could mean that the people of the ancient past, the D Clan, who fought against the World Government, could be the Shandians or have connections with them. As the Shandians worship the sun god Nika, who stands for a warrior of liberation that saves people with a smile, they could also very well have connections with Joy Boy.
